House Race Hotline Extra: Utah 03 (Utah GOP Exec. Dir. says good chance Cannon could go down)
National Journal: The Hotline ^ | 27 June 2006

Posted on 06/27/2006 11:37:28 AM PDT by Spiff

House Race Hotline Extra: Utah 03 Some quotes to illustrate the importance of this race.

"There is a very good chance that he could go down," Jeff Hartley, executive director of the Utah Republican Party, tells First Read. "You wouldn't have the involvement from the White House if he weren't in jeopardy." (NBC News)

Consultant LeVarr Webb: "A low turnout is expected, so be one of the few who make a difference and have a voice." (Utah Policy Daily) )

UT GOP Chair Joe Cannon "says he's trying to stay neutral" in his brother's UT 03 primary, "but it didn't come across that way" in his online comments about challenger/alleged Satan victim John Jacob (Salt Lake Tribune).

A poll published over the weekend by the Deseret Morning News and KSL-TV, conducted by Dan Jones & Associates, found Cannon ahead — 46-33 percent among registered voters in the 3rd District. But 18 percent of voters remained undecided. "That's one of the highest 'undecideds' numbers I've seen so close to a primary election," said Jones, who has polled in Utah for more than 30 years. (Deseret News)

Jacob backtracks on his "Satan" comments: "What the [Salt Lake Tribune] reported and what I said weren't the same thing. It wasn't that [the devil] was trying to keep me out of Washington. I was just saying when you're trying to get into politics, there's a lot of adversity. … Contrary to reports of saying it was keeping me from being there, it was going to help me in training when I get there. It's not the devil; it's adversity." (Utah Policy Daily)

"You might have noticed, for a website that is supposed to represent a "caucus" that Tancredo®'s name appears very prominently and to the exclusion of everyone else."

That is an absolute load of bull to anyone who takes the time to look at the website.

We've been over the Reagan amnesty a million times on this site and it was a policy difference I had. Worse yet since we all agree it was a mistake the last thing we need to do is make the same one over.

Why then does president Bush support a bill that mirrors so closey the failed 1986 bill? Why will it work this time?

Your post, of course, is a total misrepresentation of Reagan's position, vis a vis illegal immigration.

At least Reagan gave the compromise bill he signed an honest title: "Amnesty".

But part of that deal was enforcement in the workplace and on the border.

Of course, those who think and act suspiciously like you and your open borders fellow travelers did not act in good faith on the enforcement side.

Which, of course, is why conservatives today overwhelmingly refuse to be fooled.

Their demand is simple: Enforce the law, and enforce the border. Period.

The elephant has a long memory...

Nope.... and a lot of the people I read had voted.

Saw a lot of comments about the voting machines as well... at least their machines have a paper trail. I'd be worried if they didn't.

It can't be for votes for the GOP because they'll never get them. I lean toward appeasing big business and the Chamber of Commerce, they want the people in here and the more the better.

No. Certainly you are aware that one of the companies making electronic voting machines was sold to a Venezuela company. The machines don't give a paper trail and the company said how their machines calculate is proprietary info. Local jurisdictions have no way of verifying the validity of the data... one state (New Mexico) has already scrapped the machines and (for the short term) gone to paper ballots.

Thank you for your concern, but IMO, it ain't the Cannon people who will be making a run for the razor blade aisle at Walgreen's tonight.

Excellent, every vote counts. By the looks of things Cannon may have to rely on the illegals in his district to win.

Illegal immigration should be the litmus test in this election. Cannon is allied with forces such as MEChA and La Raza who want unrestricted illegal immigration. He wants the taxpayers of Utah to pay for illegal immigrants who use social services(such as schooling and medical care) which is exclusively reserved for the residents of Utah because they pay taxes. He supports CIRA and its potential of having 100 million immigrants entering this country. I hope that the people of his dictrict vote him out of office because of his support of illegal immigrants

I thought I remembered correctly. I just went back and checked. Reagan when declaring his run for the Presidency in 1979 proposed open borders with both Mexico and Canada. He proposed that both Mexican and Canadian citizens could cross the US border at will. No need for a visa, immigration papers, or anything else. Reagan proposed that all a Mexican needed was a Mexican Birth certificate to come to the USA for as long and as often as the Mexican wanted.
