Bush slams leak of terror finance story

President Bush on Monday sharply condemned the disclosure of a secret anti-terrorism program that taps into an immense international database of confidential financial records. "The disclosure of this program is disgraceful," he said.

"For people to leak that program and for a newspaper to publish it does great harm to the United States of America," Bush said. He said the disclosure of the program "makes it harder to win this war on terror."

The program has been going on since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. It was disclosed last week by several news organizations.

Using broad government subpoenas, the program allows U.S. counterterrorism analysts to obtain financial information from a vast database maintained by a company based in Belgium. It routes about 11 million financial transactions daily among 7,800 banks and other financial institutions in 200 countries.

"Congress was briefed and what we did was fully authorized under the law," Bush said, talking with reporters in the Roosevelt Room after meeting with groups that support U.S. troops in Iraq.

So do something Mr. Softie president! Call a press conference and tell the American people what the Times did. Say its un American and possibly treason and that you will ask Justice to conduct an investigation which could lead to a good old cleansing firing squad. Up 5 pts. in the polls is a bonus.

One step at a time...

I'm for that as long as that one step is summary execution.

the Times's new publisher, Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger Jr ... was a sixties anti-war activist who famously declared that in a confrontation between an American and a North Vietnamese soldier he'd want to see the American get shot."

Bush traditionally comes out with this type of statement even as the DoJ or other appropriate authority is working behind the scenes ...

Excerpt from press conference on 12-19-05:

Q - Mr. President, thank you, sir. Are you going to order a leaks investigation into the disclosure of the NSA surveillance program?

Pres. Bush - We're at war, and we must protect America's secrets. And so the Justice Department, I presume, will proceed forward with a full investigation. I haven't ordered one, because I understand there's kind of a natural progression that will take place when this kind of leak emerges.

"Just an opinion....of course."

Good opinion.

I would go even further and say that when we have even many conservatives that don't understand the difference between classified information and freedom of the press, as well as most liberals, it puts the odds squarely in the NYTs side that the Fed will never go after them.

Most fall for the fallacious argument that slippery slope applies...if the Feds prosecute over this then what is next...our freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of internet...

These MSMs use ignorance, fear, and fallacious arguments to their advantage.

The NYT has basically responded to the Bush report with a big Go F*** Yourself, America

King said this weekend that he wants the Times prosecuted by the AG but Congress can actually get the ball rolling. Call Risen to testify in front of a committee, put him under oath and then ask who their source is and if he refuses to answer hold him in contempt.

I am glad you posted that...

Some freepers have been assuming, I think, that Bush and the Justice Dept. have done nothing about the previous leaks..

Last week, when they arrested those terrorists in Florida, they mentioned that they had been following them for months and months...

The Justice Dept. HAS to take it's time, and make SURE they have their ducks in a row, before making their actions known.

We don't know yet...but it is possible that the previous cases COULD be about ready to be prosecuted...which might make the White House less inclined to overreact to this one...knowing what is coming later.

We are too busy prosecuting Scooter Libby for NO CRIME just to appease the Dums and show the "new tone" in Washington.

Just watched some dickhead from the Washington Post defend The New York Times actions in this matter.

His defended The Times by saying, "they FEEL as though they have an obligation ..."

There's the liberal core for you. The don't KNOW, the don't BELIEVE, they FEEL?

I have only one question. Who voted for Pinch Sulzberger or Bill Keller? They have no right to make these decisions that directly affect the security of the United States.

Remember, Pinch Sulzberger has been an enemy of the United States for 40 years and in 1968 famously declared that in a confrontation between an American and a North Vietnamese soldier he'd want to see the American get shot. His own father, "Punch," who was then the Times' publisher, considered his son's words treasonous.

I firmly believe nothing would make Pinch happier than to see another terrorist disaster in America.

Exactly.

A legal action against the NYT places them in victim status....a liberal heaven of sorts.

Should that happen, that's all we'll see 24/7...the federal government trying to kill freedom of the press.

When the left is digging a hole, hand them a shovel. Don't give them a way out and don't give them a weapon to use in the coming campaign seasons of 06 and even 08.

If another attack happens...or as many say WHEN and not IF...the administration has a built-in accomplice in the NYT, LAT, and WASHPOST.

I just read that article, and actually the Slimes did a pretty good job of fair balance.

We will see how this sorts itself out.

Peter King can start the ball rolling and his counterpart in the Senate can do the same there.

nikos:

To clarify, I wasn't saying it's a Freedom of the Press issue. I just meant that that's what the left will try and spin it as.
