Bush slams leak of terror finance story

President Bush on Monday sharply condemned the disclosure of a secret anti-terrorism program that taps into an immense international database of confidential financial records. "The disclosure of this program is disgraceful," he said.

"For people to leak that program and for a newspaper to publish it does great harm to the United States of America," Bush said. He said the disclosure of the program "makes it harder to win this war on terror."

The program has been going on since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. It was disclosed last week by several news organizations.

Using broad government subpoenas, the program allows U.S. counterterrorism analysts to obtain financial information from a vast database maintained by a company based in Belgium. It routes about 11 million financial transactions daily among 7,800 banks and other financial institutions in 200 countries.

"Congress was briefed and what we did was fully authorized under the law," Bush said, talking with reporters in the Roosevelt Room after meeting with groups that support U.S. troops in Iraq.

He said the disclosure of the program "makes it harder to win this war on terror."

And that's exactly why they disclosed it. Deeds such as these should be proof that editors from papers such as the NYT must be either loony or perhaps demon-possessed. I don't understand how hyper-liberals perceive they would fare better under Sharia law than they do now. Truly, these folks are sick in the head. Do they have half a clue on what would happen to their rather fast-and-loose lifestyle and worldview should they succede in handing America over to it's enemies? Are they seriously expecting they'll be continuing to be attending their "Diversity Days" parades? Do they seriously expect that our would-be new overlords will contribute to the ACLU? What on earth do they expect or want as the outcome of their treasonous actions?

Many things said and done during this war have been disgraceful, even treasonous. From the Slimes to slimey Dems, leaks and more leaks, the Slimes, lies and more leaks, the Slimes, etc. Any repercussions yet after everything? It won't start now.

Rather than prosecute this and let the left once again spin things to their advantage ("FREEDOM OF PRESS!" etc.), I'd much rather wage a public campaign by the Administration whereby they constantly and forcefully rebuke the NY Times for this and hopefully allow it to become conventional wisdom with the general public that the MSM is not on our side.

Disgraceful...makes it harder...

Isn't that what he said the last time they did overt damage to national security?

"DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, MR. PRESIDENT!!!!!! "

I agree. Have a prime time national address tonight and announce that leakers and those that publish past and future leaks will be punished by allowable law and that includes members of the US Congress.

While he is at he should tell Arlen Specter to shut up.

Question: If someone were to call the FBI and report this "reporter" as a traitor and as having abetted the enemy... do you think the FBI would investigate? Can I, and several thousands of my best friends, sue this guy for putting our lives in danger?

I've  often had thoughts that the NYTimes might be deliberately trying to prod the Bush Justice Department into legal action against them.

This link  NY Times pushing to be charged? UPDATED at the Anchoress site directs you to a site that states an opinion on that possibility:

The Scratching Post - KTCat is a marketer who is wondering if perhaps the NY Times IS deliberately trying to provoke the WH into making charges against them

Well, W, you're kinda, sorta, maybe, starting to talk the talk. How soon till you start taking those first baby steps towards eventually walking the walk?

G.Mason nailed it in reply #28 above:

It would make more sense to rid the United States of the enemy within.

Afterall is said and done, that will have to be done anyway.

Amen!

Let's go Mr. President. You've got at least 80% of us behind you.

As you have said, the WOT will not be won overnight. Might as well set a precedent right here and now and stop this treasonous behavior in the future. American lives will be saved as a result.

How do you ask an American soldier to give his life because Pinch, et al decided to try and boost circulation by being a traitor?

"FILE CHARGES"

I agree. Here's the minefield, though:

Nazis and Marxists love to either control news or shut down those who broadcast news without state control. The President and the AG have to make this a rock-solid, kryptonite-to-the-MSM case. Otherwise, the political cost for the adminstration could be staggering.

That said, I think such a case can be made, and is probably being forged right now.

I read it here and I believe on TheAnchoressonline.com (wonderful conservative blog).

She indicated that the NY Daily News sells more...and the WSJ also enjoys higher circulation.

No...to be blunt he was PISSED! His voice pattern indicated great agitation while trying to be civil.

Now we get to see if the AG has any stones.....Dont listen to what they say....watch what they do.

Do we have any idea who the leakers are? Obviously, they can be tracked back to Congress I would think.

I have seen nothing to date that suggests that the government is doing anything but looking to prevent terrorism.

No one is trying to restrict a newspaper's right to publish anything they want....BUT once they publish it then they should be subjected to the same laws as anyone else.

Having said that, the NY Times needs to be indicted on this, immediately along with the leakers, WHOMEVER THEY ARE!!!
