Bush slams leak of terror finance story

President Bush on Monday sharply condemned the disclosure of a secret anti-terrorism program that taps into an immense international database of confidential financial records. "The disclosure of this program is disgraceful," he said.
"For people to leak that program and for a newspaper to publish it does great harm to the United States of America," Bush said. He said the disclosure of the program "makes it harder to win this war on terror."
The program has been going on since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. It was disclosed last week by several news organizations.
Using broad government subpoenas, the program allows U.S. counterterrorism analysts to obtain financial information from a vast database maintained by a company based in Belgium. It routes about 11 million financial transactions daily among 7,800 banks and other financial institutions in 200 countries.
"Congress was briefed and what we did was fully authorized under the law," Bush said, talking with reporters in the Roosevelt Room after meeting with groups that support U.S. troops in Iraq.

what struck me was that Bush said Congress was in on it, that tells me that the leak came from congress somewhere....

I believe just a few days ago Mohammed Karzai was widely quoted by the MSM as agonizing over continuing deaths of Afghans in the war on terror. This included even the pro-Taliban fighters -- something to the effect "they too are sons of this land". He went on to say (paraphrasal) that the International Community must do a better job of stopping terrorism at it's roots by doing a better job of intercepting funds and other "supplies" (my word).
The MSM of course loved this: It sounds like real anti-military sentiment and perhaps criticism of "Amerika" for fighting the war on terror by ineffective means.
Of course, I am pretty sure the above was taken somewhat out of context. Karzai may well have been simply saying that as long as all countries, not just the U.S., with an official stance against terrorism, must do a better job on the supply side of the equation. Otherwise the war on terror will result in deaths of his countrymen, on both sides, "forever". I can hardly blame him for that opinion: He's probably right.
And yet, his plea coming just before (well, I think it was before) the Times revelation of the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program seems so, um, prophetic. Almost as if it could have been directed right at Killer, er, I mean Keller. But, hey, we know the Times is only concerned about deaths of Americans, or Afghans, if:
1) It can make Bush look bad and / or;
2) It'll sell some papers. (Yes, I really do think they even put "1" before "2"!)
I can guarantee Mr. Keller and Co. will, with this, story cause the deaths of more Americans and Afghans than would otherwise occur. Maybe a lot more.
Here's an idea: Maybe Karzai can extradite the Times' management and staff to Kabul. I'm sure Afghan-run prisons are really fun. (Keller can then beg to be sent
to "GitMo".) Wouldn't it be great?
Thank you for the list of advertisers. Now we can do our job to let these advertisers know they are complicit with a newspaper that endangers our nation's security. As such they can no longer expect our patronage of their products.

More to the point; what is he going to do about it. . .

And while the Lib's decry Iraq's amnesty decision for various imprisoned terrorists. . .we know that Hillary made the same decision for terrorists - FOR amnesty - a few years back - without recriminations of course. . .
Safe to assume this could be Hillary's starting position for the 'WOT' more aptly/honestly. . .described as 'War on Terrorists' who want to destroy ALL civilization; NOT just Bush Country.
And now. . .going back to your statement re the downside of 'Security' . .and my question. . .
