A tighter race is looming in the battle for the United States Senate. GOP incumbent Jim Talent trailed democrat Claire McCaskill by a slim 3 points in January.
Now, McCaskill's lead is six points and McCaskill's edge mirrors Nixons in the governors race.
She leads among women by 13%, and independent voters by 14%.
McCaskill leads big in St. Louis City, and has a 12% edge in St. Louis County.
The change is still within the margin of error. Most polls have shown that Jim Talent is in trouble, including Rasmussen (branded as the most reliable pollster when people like the results).
It is a poll under the name of a liberal newspaper. It is meaningful only if it can be compared to a previous poll by the same outfit, whatever that outfit is. Still it sucks. Talent is an intelligent senator, and it would sadden me greatly to see him go down in the tide. Maybe my fellow psephological guru on this site has some thoughts.
It's all about turnout, turnout, turnout. Who is the most motivated. I know I would walk across broken glass to vote for my Conservative Republican Congressman, Dave Weldon. I just hope Missouri Republicans are similarly motivated.
I don't know about this particular poll. But it is over four months until the election. In politics, that is almost an eternity. Most people haven't even begun to think about the election. So, I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch over this poll. To the Libs, polls always begets news. But curiously, the resultant news ALWAYS favors the Libs. Let them revel in drinking their bath water.

Among 800 likely voters polled last week, 49 percent supported state Auditor Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, in her quest to replace U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo. That compared to 43 percent who favored retaining Talent, who has been in office since 2003. The remaining 8 percent were undecided.
Missouri voters say they're willing to spend more tax dollars to restore Medicaid coverage to 90,000 residents, and strongly support increasing the state's minimum wage for workers.
They also continue to overwhelmingly embrace a ballot proposal that would protect many forms of embryonic stem cell research, and one to increase the state's tobacco taxes.
MO sucks!! They agree to the baby-killing stem cell research!
No we don't. Were pretty solidly red. The Post-Dispatch always writes stuff like this. When I first moved here I thought Missourians supported every tax increase on the planet. Wrong. And you would not believe the money they have poured into this stem cell initiative. Fancy tv ads all the time. They imply that the research, which they never say is going to be embronic stem cells paid for with tax dollars, will cure absolutely everything and that this initiative simply is to insure that, if these miracle cures become available, folks in the state won't be prohibited from benefitting from them. It is the most dishonest thing I have ever seen
LOL. Were not ganging up on you, water. The state is quite conservative. If we can prevent the voter fraud in St. Louis and Kansas City, I'm pretty sure we'll be alright and keep Jim Talent in the Senate.
Don't read too much into this poll by the Liberal Left-wing rag called the Post Dispatch. My wife's Grandparents labeled the Post a YELLOW JOURNAL in the early 20th century.
Hasn't changed its spots. Probably 5-6 points off because of its bias.
Missouri's new voter ID law goes into effect for the November 2006 election requiring a picture ID. I hope it reduces the criminal voting in St. Louis and Kansas City by the democrats. I believe it will have the desired effect because the democrats have their skivvies in a jammy packed wad over the law.
The Post-Dispatch, which I have not subscribed to in years (I won't even buy the Sunday edition for the ads), is our very own Pravda.
"Anybody knows how reliable this poll is?"
Talent is finito. He voted for the Senate immigration bill. McCaskill is running on enforcement first. It's all over her website.
Here's her website
http://www.claireonline.com/
Clearly she's making immigration a major issue of her campaign.
In Tennessee and Virginia the Dem and Repub Senate candidates are all against the Senate bill and for enforcement. In Ohio both sides are for the Senate bill. In Nebraska the Republican running against Nelson has publicly supported the Senate bill. Nelson will be reelected. Dem Cantwell in Washington is IMO finished for her support of the Senate bill, the Republican is against.
In 2002 the final S.L. P-D poll had Talent and Carnahan tied at 48%.
The problem in MO, as seen from TN, is the liberal democratic infrastructure. There appears to be a lot of fraud and judicial activism for any Republican to overcome.
