An airplane enroute to St. Thomas from Fort Lauderdale crashed at 13:15 approximately 33 nautical miles northwest of the main island of Puerto Rico.
Fuel starvation most likely caused the accident since seven minutes before dropping off the San Juan CERAP radar, the pilot had reported being low on fuel and that he was going to attempt a landing at the Aguadilla Airport (old Ramey AF - BQN/TJBQ) in the northwest corner of the island.
The pilot, identified as James W. Herron, 59, and resident of St. Thomas, was located in the ocean approximately 22 minutes after crashing by a Puerto Rico Police Department airplane, and just later rescued by a US Coast Guard helicopter.
The pilot and only occupant of the airplane was flown to the USCG Borinquen Air Station, where he refused medical attention and asked for passage to the US Virgin Islands, just east of Puerto Rico.
There's a guy in Hawaii who has done the same thing...
...more than once.
High gas prices. It's Bush's fault.
Ping.
20 Bucks in gas aint what it used to be.
A Darwin Award was just out of his grasp.
Yikes. In other news, the starpower generator quit, and I had to go fuel it up. LOL.
Remembering to put fuel in the tank, pricesless.....
For everything else, there's Mastercard
So how much is a ticket from Ft. Lauderdale to almost Puerto Rico?
We DON'T HAVE TIME to get gas - we're already late!
Ah, probably less than a ticket from Ottawa to almost Edmonton. ;)
That's what he gets for flying to Puerto Rico.
Next time just visit the Bronx.
I hate it when that happens.

---Great line! :)
This is exactly why I will never become a pilot. I'm always forgetting stuff and when you're in the air forgetting stuff is.....bad. I guess you could call me a big picture guy, not a detail type.
actually, it is - stupid storm front. LOL. I kept the lights on all day, though. Looks like that $600 generator was not so idiotic, after all.
"Ummmm....when I was #1 for takeoff...."
Fuel isn't the best thing to grape off on the old checklist.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this guy was a "motivated" traveller who is wanted by somebody.

--- You must run a Motel 6, "we'll keep the lights on for you" LOL ! I'm going to build my own generator pretty soon. :) People never think of preventitive measures until it's too late. I always surprise them by pulling rabbits out of my azz eerrrrr i mean hat! :)
(((PING)))) for Paleo, he's our airplane pinger
1 Ping please....
