WaPo's Shales: Rather Was a Very Activist Anchor [I'll Say!]
CBS Radio News/NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

CBS radio news just ran an item on the departure of Dan Rather. There was a surprising bit of candor in which CBS reported that Rather had "expressed frustration, feeling he'd been shelved by the network."

There was also a bit of - presumably - unintentional humor. We were treated to a clip of the Washington Post's [very liberal] media critic Tom Shales informing us that Rather "was a very activist anchor, and he changed the role of anchor."

I'll say! So activist that when he didn't have the makings of a story with which to smear President Bush, he went out and got some blatantly forged documents!

Dan can always avoid the greeter-at-Wal-Mart career move. I understand that Kinko's needs extra help keeping all those FAX machines in prime working order. For some reason, their business is booming.

Rather had "expressed frustration, feeling he'd been shelved by the network."

Companies are notorious for doing this to people who suck at their job.

I heard ABC radio news refer to Rather's "Flawed" report on President Bush's national guard service leading to him leaving as anchor on CBS. I couldn't believe my ears. Flawed! Try forged.

Unfortunately Dan turned into a millstone around CBS' neck. For a long time Dan was the point man in Twist for that network, and everyone recognized it. There is a time to cut your losses.

Anchors became the butt of everyone's jokes. He was to anchoring what Clinton was to cigars.

"Rather severs ties with CBS"

Should read, "CBS severs ties with Rather".

Mark, it was even worse than forged documents. The documents never existed - they were made up out of whole cloth.

BTW - are you going to be monitoring Perky Katie every evening in addition to your Today Show morning duties? If yes, you have my sympathy as well as my gratitude.

Tom Shales is an insect who covers TV for the Washington Post.

I heard the report as well, and they did a good job on him! I suppose there is no love lost with CBS as Rather thought he was indispensable and found out he was not! Love it!!
