President Bush predicted on Wednesday that Republicans will maintain majority control of the House and Senate this November despite polls showing voters favor putting Democrats in charge.
"I believe we're going to hold the House and the Senate because our philosophy is one that is forward-looking and optimistic and has worked," Bush told reporters at a White House news conference.
Last week, the Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that only 24 percent of those surveyed approve of the way the Republican-controlled Congress is doing its job. Fifty-two percent said they want Democrats to capture control of Congress in November, about the same as last month's survey.
Bush said that in 2004 he faced questions on whether he could win re-election despite unfavorable numbers. This year, he contended, is no different.
"The elections are a long way off," the president said nearly five months out. "What's going to matter is who's got the plan that will enable us to succeed in Iraq and keep the economy growing."
He criticized some in the Democratic Party for calling for a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq and offered his oft-repeated line that Democrats want to raise taxes.
The POTUS is right. The democrats, after six years, still have absolutely no message...other than "Bush is Hitler"...and geeee look how that has worked for them.
You heard it hear first.
The lunatic Left always goes into bipolar optimism mode right before they get kicked in the groin.
That's more than an "oft-repeated line," it's the truth!
Sorry, WOT still is the #1 issue, whatever a thousand rigged polls say.
The Dems are great at winning elections 11 months of each year. The only one that gives them trouble is November. That's when people actually go to a voting machine and vote.
What a spin job. The approval rate they mentioned is of "congress" as a whole, not the "Republican-controlled Congresss".
The media is out of control.
We don't hold the Senate now. What makes him think that'll change.
- Conservatives will overwhelmingly support House candidates because of their fierce stand against the Senate/Bush administration AMNESTY plan
- Dim Governors are vulnerable (MI, WI for example) and conservatives will support Republican gubernatorial candidates
- Republicans hold a majority of state legislatures and will receive votes from conservatives as well
- The odd man out is the Senate. Conservatives, who are going to support Republicans for all other races, are going to adopt a "might as well" attitude and hold their noses for Senate RINOs, as there is a dearth of good conservatives running for Senate races. So inevitably, they'll just vote straight party GOP and the GOP will not only retain control of the Legislative branch, but may pick up an additional 10 seats overall.
- Pelosi will be forced to step down from Minority Leader, Murtha will be history and Howard Dean may be forced to step down as DNC chairman
If he stops talking about "the jobs americans won't do", yes.
after watching the democrats implode after just a week(just confirming their lack of leadership) I wouldn't want them in charge of anything.. :\
"What's going to matter is who's got the plan that will enable us to succeed in Iraq and keep the economy growing."
You know, this has to keep him up some nights, mulling this over. If the Dems do get back any tiny piece of the WH, it's going to be a nightmare for all of us.
I'm glad President Bush is on the payroll right now to worry about this stuff for us.
As for the Dems? Let's see...nothing but bad news and bashing and obstructionism and wishing America ill for the past five years; no new ideas brought to the table, and an obvious affinity for cozying up to The Enemy.
A sure-fire strategy to regain power, LOL!
This is one more thing that I think President Bush is right about.
That and sooner or later the Dems. will have a "Wellstone" moment and crash and burn.
Where's the popcorn?
The polls I see show a general dissatisfaction with the Republicans, and a large distrust of Congress in general. Haven't seen much that credibly indicated that people wanted the Democrats in charge.
If the Democrats continue to run on the platform where they're supposed to be better than Republicans, but still don't have a message or agenda that clicks with the average American, the Democrats are going to be surprised at how many of their traditional votes are going to go to independents and conservatives.
To a lot of moderate voters - a clear message and agenda is preferable to a candidate who insists first that they have plan, and secondly that the other guys don't, without any credible evidence to either... which describes the Democrats to the "t".
I reckon the Dixie Chicks are conducting a poll of their own right now. They have put all there eggs in the basket of preserving and amplifying their grievances against President Bush and Middle America.
The cancelled concert dates are an indication of how well that message is selling to the American people. That very same message is the only weapon in the Democrat's arsenal.
I am confident going into November. I predict a Republican net gain of two seats in the Senate and four seats in the House.
