Doctor, consumer group sue KFC

A doctor and a consumer group have sued KFC in an effort to stop the chicken chain from cooking with high-fat partially hydrogenated oil.

Dr. Arthur Hoyte, a retired physician from Rockville, Md., and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, want a judge to order Kentucky Fried Chicken to use other types of cooking oils or make sure customers know about trans fat content immediately before they make a purchase.

KFC spokeswoman Laurie Schalow called the lawsuit frivolous and said the company will fight it in court. Schalow said KFC is looking at using other types of oil for cooking, but it is committed to maintaining "KFC's unique taste and flavor."

KFC provides nutrition and fat information to consumers online and in restaurants, Schalow said.

"We have for a very long time," she said.

Michael Jacobsen, the executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said Louisville-based KFC parent company Yum Brands Inc. knows that other, healthier cooking products are available.

"KFC knows this, yet it recklessly puts its customers at risk of a Kentucky Fried Coronary," Jacobsen said.

Free will? That doesn't make sense....everyone is a victim and no one is ever held responsible for shoving that chicken in their mouths.

Let's make one thing clear: Partially hydrogenated oil is a poison.

Whatever

Here is a scary thought.

If these law suits go through....

Will that open a precedent window to come after parents for having a stick of margarine on the table?

let the CUSTOMER DECIDE.

Funny how that really does work if you are reasonable. You could probably have a nice (and delicious) KFC dinner once every month or so and eat healthy most of the time and be fine. But the government and consumer groups think we are all drooling idiots that need strict guidance in every aspect of our lives, so they use the "punish the class" strategy.

I got sloppy fat off of fast food 3 years ago. Did I sue? Nope. I lost 100 pounds. Now I can have some fast food maybe once every week or two. I weigh myself every day and if I'm up a pound, I cut back.

You'd be hard-pressed to find an oil that wasn't "high-fat".

These are man-made chemicals that your body cannot digest, and that build up in your bloodstream until they eventually kill you.

Arth, to get into your bloodstream, the stuff has to be digested.

Btw, your body "digests" man-made stuff all the time.

Okay, okay, but it is a center. ;')

How about the reverse of a boycott? I don't believe I've ever eaten at KFC, but it's time I did.

FReep the CSPI offices?

Change from defense to offense, and start a drive for a Constitutional Amendment to ban vegetarianism? ;')

"Kentucky Fried Coronary"
...a phrase that looks actionable to me.

You want a real good defense to the vegetarian's offense?

Counter their ban in their heart.

Ban soy products.

Olive oil?

Although it's mostly unsaturated and much healthier for you, olive oil is still basically 100% fat, according to the nutritional label.

olive oil besides being expensive when compared to the boxed commercial cooking oils, has too low a smoke point when compared to other cooking oils to be used for relatively high temperature cooking. Peanut oil is very good but too many people have peanut allergies and it too is expensive.

This man uses it for deep frying.

Since the nanny staters succeeded in their oppressive smoking bans, there is no more free will to just chose somewhere else.

Whatever they feel should be banned or restricted will be.

And, supporters thought they were protecting the public health, not giving up their liberties.

Yes, I also use olive oil for frying.
veal or pork cutlets, sauteed shrimp, scallops, squid--olive oil
French fried potatos or fried chicken or chicken fried steak---peanut oil
Smoke point:
375 F: Olive Oil ~$18.00 per gallon
440 F: Peanut Oil $8.00 per gallon

My whole family has only used olive oil for cooking. I've never seen or experienced what this smoke point is that you are referring to.

Ah, you must cook professionally? I don't measure daily cooking like that.

Ironically, I have an addiction to nuts, especially peanuts. Yet I don't like peanut oil.
