Doctor, consumer group sue KFC

A doctor and a consumer group have sued KFC in an effort to stop the chicken chain from cooking with high-fat partially hydrogenated oil.

Dr. Arthur Hoyte, a retired physician from Rockville, Md., and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, want a judge to order Kentucky Fried Chicken to use other types of cooking oils or make sure customers know about trans fat content immediately before they make a purchase.

KFC spokeswoman Laurie Schalow called the lawsuit frivolous and said the company will fight it in court. Schalow said KFC is looking at using other types of oil for cooking, but it is committed to maintaining "KFC's unique taste and flavor."

KFC provides nutrition and fat information to consumers online and in restaurants, Schalow said.

"We have for a very long time," she said.

Michael Jacobsen, the executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said Louisville-based KFC parent company Yum Brands Inc. knows that other, healthier cooking products are available.

"KFC knows this, yet it recklessly puts its customers at risk of a Kentucky Fried Coronary," Jacobsen said.

What happened to people just exercizing their free will and not eat at KFC, if they don't like the oil they use for cooking?

This lawsuit is preposterous.

Products liability law is the most paternalistic bunch of garbage our legal tradition has ever produced. It treats people like paraplegic babies with Down Syndrome.

Have these people ever heard of a home cooked meal? It really isn't that hard to do. When I was a teen, my aunt picked a different night for my cousins and I to cook dinner. Sometimes it was a disaster, but you eventually get the hang of it. Also, it is a lot cheaper than eating out all the time.

This lawsuit is preposterous.

Well of course it is but the trial lawyers are hoping it succeeds so they can line their pockets with litigation "shake down" lawsuits similar to Big Tobacco

Sorry I should have captioned that photo. That was actually Michael Jacobsen, PhD, executive director of the "Center for Science in the Public Interest".

Oh, Mercy me, you expect an individual to make a judgement call! It's all about money. I wonder if these folks would walk in front of a speeding car rather then wait for the car to pass just to file a lawsuit. Only in America! Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Smokers warned fast food eaters. Fast food eaters didn't listen. You broke the dam.

Thank you. I've been looking for something to illustrate CSPI's insane left leanings. This is perfect.

""Dr. Arthur Hoyte, a retired physician " They claim he was an MD."

But what they DON'T tell you is that the "Center for Science in the Public Interest" is an arm of PETA.

I do agree that any food services that use partially hydrogenated oil should have to tell you, so you can avoid the stuff if you want (it's nasty, and I refuse to eat the stuff). As for an outright ban or payments of damages, that's just STUPID.

Let the customer know, and then let the CUSTOMER DECIDE.

They are already doing that.

This is not about health, it's about $$$$$$$$$$$$ to the lawyers filing frivolous class action suits.
