PITTSBURGH (AP) - Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, broke his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash Monday in which he was not wearing a helmet.
Four doctors operated on Roethlisberger for seven hours to treat multiple facial fractures and "all of the fractures were successfully repaired," Dr. Harry W. Sell, chairman of the surgery department at Mercy Hospital, told reporters late Monday night.
Dr. Daniel Pituch, who led the team, said Roethlisberger was in serious but stable condition, and doctors were aware of no other serious injuries.
"His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury and there are no other confirmed injuries at this time," he said.

Around here motorcyclists not wearing a helment are called "organ donors" by the cops.
Statistically they are right. About 80% of motorcycle deaths here are Harley riders not wearing helments. (no offense to Harley riders but the numbers don't lie.)
What about a June Bug in the chest at 65mph?
Yes.
You're right. No offense to Harley Riders but they are more likely to wear half shells or no helmet at all.
To a sport bike rider, a matching colorfull fullface helmet is almost considered an accessory to his bike.
Image. Its all about image.
Someone on our local radio station this morning wondered how long it would be before one of Ben's molars showed up on E-Bay!
Umm....no. Every employee (in theory) is an asset to his/her employer, but that doesn't give the employer the right to mandate (legal) personal behavior. My employer certainly needs me, but I'd laugh in his face if he called me into his office and started telling me what safety gear he wanted me to wear on my motorcycle. It's none of his business.
As for him being part of the NFL. It's a game. I ride with several doctors that work with my wife these days, and IMHO, society would lose a lot more if one of them were injured than any sports figure.
And with Cowher you need a helmet to avoid getting a spit shower.
My Shoei is pretty comfortable with the vents wide open at any speed over 30mph. It's not horribly uncomfortable except at stoplights in the Texas sun where it can get pretty miserable. I'm seriously thinking about getting a half-helmet for in town trips where I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time at lights.
My windshield always protected me from that collision. I suspect it would leave a large bruise.
Agree with the first sentiment ... not the second.
Signed ...
Bronco fan foremost followed by Bengals.
All true.
Head injury ain't no good.
And this one doesn't look very good.
Bush's fault.
Maybe the reason it was a minor accident is because you had a helmet on! A lesson for others?
With injuries like this, Big Ben might never be the same. NFL Quarterbacks operate at the very pinnacle of athletic ability. There is no reason to believe that the newly remodled Ben Roethlisberger will be able to do the things the old one did.
And if the knees really are banged up, he has made the jump from young athletic quarterback to old pocket passing skills quarterback in one Summer. He might not do well in that role.
I hate to say it, but Ben Roethlisberger might be done. It's early to say, but those injuries sound pretty bad.
The Steelers can void his contract, too.
Show me. I flat out don't believe you. Branding has nothing to do with it. EVERY study has shown cruisers and touring bikes are UNDER REPRESENTED in accidents with sport bikes and their derivatives compromising the lion's share of accidents.
That statistic is bulls**t and you know it. Cite your examples of the data.
If you actually studied the data, you'd find that the 18-24 year old Rocket Riders account for the majority of the motorcycle fatalities, followed closely by the 65+ crowd.
The "organ donor" canard is nothing more than a cheap insult. Head injury victims are not organ donors. Take your cheap shots elsewhere, or expect to be called on them . . .
Well aren't you clever.
Thanks I'll check that line out. What I would like is a bicycle type (open web) but I doubt they are DOT certified.
