I've made a career decision to stop being a teacher and try to work for the US government in security. I've got extensive martial arts background, and have worked with police departments and have even travelled to Fort Bragg to teach combatives to a unit which went to Iraq. Unfortunately, I don't have the "official" security training needed to get into Homeland Security or the FBI or the Secret Service.
I'm trying to join the Air National Guard to get the security training, but had to have surgery years ago on my throat to repair acid reflux damage. The MEPS doctor is holding me up, and I'm afraid I won't get to go. My own personal doctor sees no reason why I can't, and I'm getting tired of sending off paperwork in an attempt to try to get in. I even paid my own money to have an endoscopy done to try to get in. So far with no luck.
As much as I've enjoyed teaching, both in elementary school and as a martial arts instructor, I know that my true talents lie in service to this country in security. My love of the military and international politics is why I chose to study history in college, and I know that this profession is where I belong.
But, as I said, the MEPS doctor is holding everything up. I'm young, and incredibly healthy, and have had no problems since the surgery. Other people get accepted with scoliosis and other more serious conditions. I really don't understand what the problem is. I plan on sending off one more round of paperwork to try to get in. After that, I don't know what I'm going to do. So please pray that I can get in. I would really appreciate it.

Prayers for you, and good luck! They definitely need people. You have that fact on your side.
Prayers and good wishes! God Bless you and keep you focused on your goals, and may you find many rewards upon your path!
If MEPS gives you a nogo, drive on as a Private Contractor.

It's nothing personal.I don't know if all the branches have the same health standards for enlistment (I would think they'd have similar standards) but if the AF doesn't take you, maybe one of the other Guard/Reserve components would.
Good luck...and keep in mind that if He wants you there, you'll get there.
Oh, just get one of those fake id cards, you know the "Matricula Consular"... they'll roll out the red carpets for you and let you in for fear they might be called racists.
I'm pulling for you, buddy. Whatever works out, assume it's for the best and don't look back.
Well I admire your courage to make such a big career change. That is not always easy to do, but if your young and single NOW is the best time to follow your dreams.
Obviously we all here appreciate your desire to serve our country. Personally, I'd encourage you to try to keep pushing through the doors. Sometimes a door we really never even considered opens up to opportunities better than we originally planned or hoped for.
Good luck from your FR family.
I know that Blackwater is right here in North Carolina where I live. But I hear that getting on with them is pretty tough. What other "contracting agencies" are there, and what are the requirements to get on? Do you have any contacts, in case this doesn't work? It was something I had considered, but have no in depth knowledge on the subject.
Thanks
Try your local Congress(person), or other conservative representative. You might even check with Veterans Affairs to see if they can help you get passed this hurdle.
God knows your heart. He will help you get to where you are really needed.
Why not just become a cop for a couple of years, or go active duty?
The Army is always the best choice in my mind because you have many more choices, and once you are in you may choose to go farther, such as airborne etc.
The problem is that the MEPS doctor is for all services, so it doesn't matter which branch I join. I'll still have to be passed by him.
And I've seen so many friends choose to be a cop as a way of moving their lives forward, then they never did. Nothing wrong with being a cop, I just believe I belong in a different area. I've got a four year degree, and my ASVAB scores were through the roof. I just need the training, and I'll be set. Which is why this hurdle is so annoying.
Prayers for you and your family--thanks for wanting to protect and defend the rest of us...
You got them. Good luck and thank you.
Go to WWW.CBP.GOV and look up the US Border Patrol. They will be hiring 6,000 new agents in the next 2 years. If you want to play a part in defending the US the Border Patrol is a good career opportunity.
Good luck and best wishes to you !
Wellll, there *is* Halliburton, but off the top of my head, I would guess Blackhawk is doing over there what a comparable unit of Halliburton would be doing. Best wishes to you and I'll pray for you!
Prayers for you that you succeed in fulfilling your wish.
I don't know the process, but any chance to go to a different doctor or request a second opinion -- there must be a way to appeal. I hope God will help you find a way.
Please be sure to let us know.
I am looking at their website -- any chance you could join part time, and later do it full time?
