UPDATE 6/11/06:
UPDATE--PROTEST RALLY to fly American Flags on FLAG DAY - San Bernardino
FReepers--
Next Wednesday, June 14 is FLAG DAY.
I am FURIOUS!
The City of San Bernardino has voted to NOT DISPLAY a large AMERICAN FLAG previously flown at City Hall, on national holidays since it might offend somebody. It took two votes--the final one was 4 to 3.
At issue is not the small U.S. flag normally flown but the big one that has been previously flown at City Hall.
Four City Council Members have refused to permit the large flag to be flown on patriotic National Holidays, for fear of 'offending' someone.
We want that large American Flag again flown PROUDLY, on America's National Holidays!
Along with others, I am organizing a rally at San Bernardino City Hall for Wednesday beginning at 3pm.
WITH AMERICAN FLAGS.
If you are within driving distance of San Bernardino--please plan to be there.
If you can forward this info to someone in the area, please do so.
If you can HELP me and others, we want Boy Scouts, Military, Teachers, everybody there with flags. Peacefully.
I will add further information to this thread and ping those who reply. I am off to meetings and will add more information and replies later.
Posted below is a color flyer you can print, email or post. Please get this to as many people as possible.
Wherever you live, this kind of attitude is heading your way among career politicians and we MUST nip it in the bud now.
Thanks!
For God and Country,
Lyman
Here is the City Council page--it does not show vote details.
I understand there was an article in the San Bernardino Sun newspaper about the vote but I did not find it in the online version.
Official Meeting Minutes including the roll call vote is not online-only available hardcopy at the City Clerk's meetings.
Here is a Summary of the vote:
In the Right Column for May 15 is a link to a PDF file. Item 43 records the motion as having failed.
Here is the exact text from that PDF:
43.
Display of U.S. Flag on Memorial Day, Flag Day and Fourth of July. (See Attached)
Failed
MOTION: That the Facilities Department be directed to display the 22x30 U.S. Flag on Memorial Day, Flag Day and on Fourth of July.

Interesting coincidence, there's another article in the forum about that town, and how messed up it is; maybe this explains why, with that attitude.
Hope I pasted this link properly.

I've been trying to post a picture here of the "DON'T TREAD ON ME!" flag!
My computer skills aren't so good, so instead I give the link to a site that has FREE FLAG CLIP ART in case anyone is interested.
Your flier is GREAT. Good luck with this important rally!
The City Council wants a judge to decide whether it can legally call an election on a measure that would bar illegal immigrants from renting in the city and force day laborers to prove they are legal residents.
The council was set to schedule an election date, but instead decided to ask a judge whether it would be legal to do so.
A letter from an attorney prompted the council's action Monday. Dana W. Reed, representing resident Florentino Garza, questioned the formula city officials used to determine how many signatures were needed to put the measure on the ballot.

Not to veer to far off subject, but since the two ideas (flag and immigration) have sort of been interwoven in this thread, I'll elaborate and hope to clarify.
Our city charter states that in order to qualify an initiative for the ballot, one must gather the number of signatures equivalent to 30% of the votes cast in the last preceding election in which a mayor was elected.
At the time of our filing of the intent to circulate (October 2005) a petition, the last preceding election was in November of 2001. Our mayoral election in November of 2005 did not result in a 50% + 1 result, so there was a runoff in February. Dana Reed is arguing that since there was an election in February and the petition signatures werent turned in until April of 2006, that our signature requirement should be based on that election...which consequently had a significantly higher turnout.
I think they are grasping at straws as you cannot have a situation where the number of signatures required to qualify an initiative is not a static predefined number.
To take this to the extreme, pretend that the mayoral winner received 50% plus one in November and then died in a car wreck in December. Then a new election would have to be held in short order.
Under Reed's interpretation, a group attempting to qualify the initiative would have been first subjected to the November 2001 signature requirement, then the November 2005 signature requirement and then subject to the election to replace the deceased Mayor.

Great flyer! I would email it to every GOP website and right wing blog in the area and ask them to pass it on, too!
Unreal!
They probably will. Will Eugene, Oregon be the next to ban such "offensive" displays? Then Seattle?
Bump
UGH!
BTTT
Bump for great justice!
Hannity would jump on this--Mark Levin too!

The presence of these four people on the council offends me. Will they now resign their positions?
Bump.
Calling you out on your comments. Are Caliphobic? You took quite a few swipes at us here and I'm curious as to whether or not you would make the same generalizations about your state would it do something like this as well? As you could probably tell from all the posters, there isn't one here who agrees with the city council's decision.
That being said, it is now up to those who live in the city and the surrounding areas to make their voices known. Do YOU have anything constructive to add to the list other than the cheap comments and barbs?
