CBS/AP) An Iraqi man who was one of the first people on the scene of the U.S. airstrike targeting Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said he saw American troops beating a man who had a beard like the al Qaeda leader.
The witness, who lives near the house where al-Zarqawi spent his last days, said he saw the man lying on the ground near an irrigation canal. He was badly wounded but still alive, the man told Associated Press Television News.
U.S. troops arriving on the scene wrapped the man's head in an Arab robe and began beating him, said the local man, who refused to give his name or show his face to the camera. His account could not be independently verified.

The irony (if you can call it that) s that one version of the story is that Iraqi police were the first on the scene; so it's entirely possible Zarqawi was getting a good old-fashioned beatdown from them (many are Shia).

Yes. They aren't even bothering to pay the civilians to lie to the camera anymore. They just make it up and pretend someone told them. How about:
Muslims expect a major criminal to get the shit kicked out of his as lays dying so they project this onto the Americans. They figure this is what MUST HAVE HAPPENED and that's the genesis of the rumor that spreads like wildfire until it reaches our drive by media. Who then have their own reasons for spreading it

LMAO, this is just too funny. Where does one start when critiquing this sort of nonsense. I guess the best approach is to just savor the lunacy and save the words for something that really matters.

Myths surround major killings of criminals. From John Dillinger to Bonnie & Clyde on down. Zarq is the same. Amplified by the fact that Muslims are not sober when it comes to spreading and accepting rumors and myths. It's wild over there

OK...so what's worse-dropping a 500 pound bomb(I suppose that was only to scare him into surrendering or something?) or beating him. Either way a monster is dead.

Just went out to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and they are carrying it as well. This isn't journalism, it is a smear campaign, possibly even treason!

"Yeah. We capture ALIVE the head of al Qaeda in Iraq, seriously injured after a bombing, and we beat him to death instead of keep him alive to milk for info."
I think the general public and the media just can't understand how methodical, disciplined, ice-water veined professional warriors operate.

we beat him to death instead of keep him alive to milk for info. That was exactly Julian Phillips' contention this morning on F & F. Even when the retired military consultant told him that Zark would have given zero intel, but his hard drives, etc., were a treasure trove, Philips still contended after the interview ended that Zark would have been more valuable alive. [Libs are so dense...or sparse.]
Julian Phillips is a hack and detriment to F&F ratings on weekends. I don't watch it anymore unless Paige Hopkins is there to slap his punk a$$ down when he starts on his pissy editorial rants.

Good grief. Sure I realize it's CBS, but it's hard to believe they would run with this.

His account could not be independently verified And yet CBS/AP find it newsworthy.

Arab society in particular seems to have a particular affinity for believing the most outlandish stories, probably because throughout history they have never had anything remotely resembling a right to free speech or freedom of the press; ergo "news" serves whatever regime (and theocracy) is in place and is likely to be untrue.
To: Lacey
Yes, I'm sure that GI's about to confirm and tag the most wanted man in Iraq, knowing that it's going to have a high profile, decided to slap him around a little first.

Unfortunately, their imagination is the only thing they have more than sand.
Equally unfortunate is that they do not tend to use their imaginations in a constructive type of way. Just MHO.

>>I hear that his family is demanding that his body be returned so it can be buried and worshipped for his martyrdom. I hope we cremate the remains and scatter them in a pig sty.
You're on the right track but you need to take it further. Feed his body to the pigs and then collect it after it passes through the pigs. If the family wants his body back, then they can have it. It could do double-duty: worship his martyrdom and fertilize the garden at the same time.
To: Lacey
gee that'd be a shame wouldn't it?
Thanks for reporting this, See B.S. and Ass. Press.
Your desire to bash American soldiers and this administration's WoT is on full view for the American voters.
