That Didn't Take Long: CNN Editor Suggests Zarqawi Death 'Not Going to Be a Big Deal'

Mark Finkelstein

June 8, 2006

You just knew it. The MSM had to find a way to downplay the significance of the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Whereas he had been portrayed as the key to violence in the country, now that he's dead, he is described as just one among many.

And sure enough, on CNN this morning at about 6:20 AM, there was Octavia Nasr CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs, interviewed by host Soledad O'Brien, suggesting that Zarqawi's death might not really be such a big deal, after all. She reported that beyond Al Qaeda, there were hundreds, even thousands, of other, home-grown insurgent groups in Iraq.

Concluded Nasr: "Some people say it will enrage the insurgency, others say it will hurt it pretty bad. But if you think about the different groups in Iraq, you have to think that Zarqawi's death is not going to be a big deal for them."That Didn't Take Long: CNN Editor Suggests Zarqawi Death 'Not Going to Be a Big Deal' view edit Posted by Mark Finkelstein on June 8, 2006 - 06:36. I hope that Bush gets out bed today and has a press conference. Otherwise this "none story" will not last until the evening news. CNN makes me puke.

here's a post from the DU from someone called "pachamama"

Wonder if they had to cut off the leg of the "Zarqawi" for authenticity purposes?

Convenient too that this would happen now....guess we should just all forget about that Haditha mess, the fact that we are approaching 2,500 dead and the fact that our economy is in big trouble.

"television" device you speak of?

Sorry, I should have explained.
It is the device that you view Sopranos, 24, and Brit Hume! No other channels or programs are considered.

"Octavia Nasr, Sssr. Editor CNN on Arab Affairs, in Paris"

An Arab, living in Paris and working for CNN?
Poor chap must be very deeply saddened. :)
The MSM's world is collapsing right before their eyes.

Andrea Mitchell looking like she lost a relative this morning. Disgusting.

I wonder if Today will bring Al-Katie back to the set just to tell their audience that this is not a good thing.

Let them spin away! Everyone knows this is a great day and they will not be fooled by lefty dribble. In all probability, it will wake up many who have been in denial re: media bias. And all I can say to them is: Welcome to Sanity Island!

All the MSM touting the same miserable message.

They're hoping against hope that innocent Iraqi civilians continue to be murdered day in and day out.

First question every day at the drive by media's morning meeting:

How do we move the goalposts?

Shock of all shocks. Was surfing past Imus and stopped to hear Mike Boettcher. Boettcher said that in response to the killing of Zarquawi there was a bombing in Iraq.

Imus stopped him and asked how he knew the bombing was in response to the killing.

Mike backtracked VERY quickly saying that it was true, he didn't know, blah blah.

Surprisingly enough Imus didn't let him get away with his garbage commentary.

Zarqawi was the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq.

Al Qaeda was the organization that attacked us on 9/11.

Zarqawi ran a training camp for Al Qaeda named Salmon Pak PRIOR to 9/11 INSIDE Iraq.

Additionally, he is the leader of the FOREIGN Al Qaeda operation inside Iraq....not the leader of the insurgency.

That is the correct answer, imho, for those who say that Zarqawi's is an insignificant death.

Well, at least Imus and Andrea Mitchell just said it's "big big news."

According to the official, Jordanian-born al-Zarqawi was "presiding over a meeting of his terrorist group" at the time of the operation.

"He died ten minutes after the operation, along with eight to 10 of his partisans," the official added.

His last words: Hey what’s that buzzing noise?

Best news of the year. I'm curious to hear how the other news stations are going to "play" it. Not curious enough to watch any of them, though.
