A couple of weeks ago, it was the flap over a Spanish rendition of the national anthem. Now it's a controversy over a demand that customers speak English when ordering a Geno's Cheese Steak in South Philadelphia. Customers have ordered cheese steaks from Geno's in South Philadelphia for 40 years. Recently they've been met by a controversial sign that reads:

"This is America. When ordering speak English."

Owner, Joey Vento questions the controversy.

"Joey Vento/Geno's Owner: "Whoa, whoa, whoa - this is America. And God forbid Joey Vento says this is America. You speak English in America."

A buddy of mine was from Philly, a steel-worker. He tried to explain something about Philly cheese-steaks. As I understand it, a philly cheese-steak must use Cheese-Whiz to be authentic.

Isn't this like the Vandals complaining that the Romans wouldn't speak Ostrogoth?

I bet the sign is in English. If you can read it ---speak it. If you cant read it , then it shouldnt upset you because you dont know what it says anyway.

Why the hell should a restaurant owner have to learn foreign languages? He's right.

WHAT a great guy!!
He's saying what the vast majority of Americans want to say but don't want to look politically incorrect. To be honest, I don't know anyone who doesn't think that people who live here should speak English. My grandparents did and they forbid their children from speaking Polish. They told them that they were Americans and should speak English.

Cheese-Whiz is for tourists and girlie men.

Make mine a Provolone with!!

And Geno's is far better than Pat's...IMHO.

This is the viewpoint of 80% of the American people. This is not the viewpoint of 80% of the Senators. What a disconnect

You buddy is wrong. My buddy, who was born in Philly and raised on cheese steaks said that a real philly cheese steak uses Velvetta. If The Great One, Mark Levin, is lurking, perhaps he can settle the issue.

My grandparents on both sides were from the Ukraine. They all learned English...not a lot..but enough to survive early on. They learned more English when their kids attended school. Certainly, one can see the benefit of NOT having bilingual classes. The benefits of learning English reach far beyond the classroom.

Some of my grandparents came from Italy...they made their kids (my parents) speak english at home. "After all, we are in America and we must become Americans now!"

a real Philly cheese steak uses Velveeta

Never!!!

Real neighborhood joints don't even have Cheese-Whiz or Velveeta. You get Provolone or American... And always "with".
