A Democratic party coup?
Town Hall ^ | June 6, 2006 | Bruce Bartlett

In 1898, one of the most shameful episodes in American political history occurred. Today called a coup d'etat, it is the only known case in the United States in which a municipal government was overthrown by violence. On May 31, 2006, the state of North Carolina issued a report on this event, which took place in the city of Wilmington.

The story begins in the aftermath of the Civil War. During Reconstruction, the federal government guaranteed voting rights for blacks in the South, most of whom became Republicans. This led to the election of many blacks and Republicans to federal and state offices in states such as North Carolina, which had been part of the Confederacy.

But the end of Reconstruction in 1877 saw the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, leaving blacks and white Republicans vulnerable to attack by the Ku Klux Klan, which was essentially an arm of the Democratic Party. With the suppression of black and Republican votes, Democrats quickly regained power and acted to keep it by disenfranchising black voters with gerrymandering, literacy tests and poll taxes.

The abominable racist past of the democrat party is something that republicans should be exploiting at every opportunity.

The way I hear it, only Democrats, and no Republicans...

1) ... won the civil war
2) ... freed the slaves
3) ... championed civil rights

And that Republicans are racist, neotheocratic fascists, with a penchant for lynching people of the minority persuasion.

"The abominable racist past of the democrat party is something that republicans should be exploiting at every opportunity."

They're evidently too inept to do so. They somehow have accepted the libnut narrative that history started in 1967.

"the Ku Klux Klan, which was essentially an arm of the Democratic Party"

Funny how so few know that. Oh, that's right, our liberal indoctrination centers (aka public schools) speak no evil of libdems, so of course few know that FACT. /spit

I agree. I can't stand the way that Democrats and journalists have whitewashed the history of the same Republican party that rose out of Ripon, Wisconsin as the party of the abolitionist movement. This article, titled Slavery, Civil Rights & Selective Memory talks about the role of Republicans in shaping civil rights. We should all brush up on the facts and challenge people when they insinuate that just because they're Democrats and call themselves "liberal", it doesn't mean they're automatically entitled to the moral high ground.

This is one reason the election of Kennedy and Johnson in 1960 was so catastrophic, IMHO. They are the ones who pushed through civil rights legislation and later the so-called Great Society programs. Sadly it is Democrats who then gained the credit for supposedly being the party of equality. What a joke. Republicans will never be able to shed the popular image of being the mostly white, racist party, no matter how unfair a stereotype it is.

I recall as a small child, hearing a radio news report about Dr. Martin Luther King and other black leaders meeting with the President and Vice President to discuss the state of race relations in the United States, and how the federal government could assure that all citizens regardless of color, could enjoy their equal rights under the law.

That was President Eisenhower, and Vice President Richard Nixon, PRE-1960s.

The 'Rats don't like to be reminded that the only way that LBJ got the Civil Rights Act passed, was with the help of REPUBLICAN Senators, because his own 'Rat Senators were deadset opposed to the Act, including one Senator Albert Gore Senior.

Another "inconvenient truth", eh Al Jr.?

The Democrats commit the crime and then over time blame the Republicans for it. Not much has changed, the bastards are still doing it to us,

This is a bright shinning example of the links between the rat and the ratmedia. These bastards have always been one in the same. Only the hand of God Himself helps us to beat them as in 2000.
