I'm betting this is much more about injury to Safer's overblown ego and sense of worth rather than any journalistic incompetence, or God forbid, anti-American bias.

Safer is a talentless hack, like most journalists, a useless sniping commentator from the sidelines. Couple that with condescending leftist elitism and you have the whole disgusting package, of little worth to the people of the United States.

The treatment of U.S. military as savages began very early in Viet Nam, and "Safer concluded with a highly personal view of the significance of Cam Ne, relating it to President Johnson's war policies [which he opposed] and to the overall U.S. effort in Viet Nam [which he also opposed]." They may hate each other but in reality, in political philosophy there is not a nickle's worth of difference between Safer and Rather.
