Bush is the Next Reagan
Jun 4, 2006
Slater Bakhtavar - Persian Journal
The same people who heavily criticized former President Reagan for his tough stance against Communism and for his aggressive push for democracy in Eastern Europe are now attacking President Bush for his tough stance against fundamentalism and his aggressive push for democracy in the Middle East.
-They argued then that Communism would never fall - it did They argue now that Islamic Fundamentalism will never fall - it will
-They argued then that the Soviet Union is too strong - it wasn't
They argue now that the insurgency is too strong - it isn't
-They argued that Reagans vision of democracy in East Europe would never work - it did
They argue now that Bushs vision of democracy for the mid-east would never work - it will
They argued then that Reagans evil empire speech was a failure - it wasn't
They argue now that Bushs axis of evil speech is a failure - it won't be
-They argued then that former soviet bloc countries wouldn't embrace democracy - they did
They argue now that middle east countries would never embrace democracy - they will
-They argued then that Eastern Europeans nations would never be our allies - they are
They argue now that middle eastern countries will never be our allies - they will be
-They argued then that people without God could never embrace democracy - they did
They argue now that Muslims will never embrace democracy - they will
-They argued then that President Reagan was unrealistic - he wasn't
They argue now that President Bush is unrealistic - he'll prove he isn't
-They argued then democracy isn't universal to former Communists - it was
They argue now democracy isn't universal to Middle Easterners - it will be
-They argued then that funding of pro-democracy groups in Eastern European countries won't work - it did
They argue now that funding of pro-democracy groups won't work in the Middle East - it will
The same exact critcism was directed at Reagan. The future will be the judge of President Bush and my guess is that he will be judged as the Great Liberator of the Middle East.
President Bush isn't in the same league as President Reagan and never will be. He has neither the vision, the personality, or the ability to inspire that Reagan did. Neither is he as much a believer in or a promoter of conservatism as Reagn was. History will judge him as a good president, but he will never be seen as great.
President Bush just doesn't have Reagan's charisma, wisdom or wit, as well as his ability to communicate.
The enthusiasm President Reagan generated for conservatism is unsurpassed.
I don't care for the all or nothing crowd.
I don't need a lecture from you about conservative values.
You asked me a question about Sandra Day O'Conner's appointmnet by Reagan, and I answered your question honetly without defending Reagan about that appointment, which is more that are willing to do about policy mistakes Bush has made.
Reagan also made a mistake ingranting amnesty, but unlike Bush, he did not have a 9/11 to deal with. The borders should have been closed down, the day 9/11 happened. To this day the borders should still be closed and a wall built.
Reagan was a good president, but you are part of the mythology group. Reagan didn't increase the number of seats in both Houses, whilst President Bush has. Reagan TALKED about abortion, but President Bush got the ant-PBA Bill pushed through Congress and don't come back at me about how a court later nullified it; you can't blame the president for that. And while Reagan lowered tax brackets, he then went along with RAISING TAXES, several times over. President Bush has NOT done that! Reagan turned tail and ran, when our Marines were killed in Lebanon; President Bush is hanging tough in Afghanistan and in Iraq. And all of that is just for starters.
"FORTRESS AMERICA" is NOYT going to fly and wasn't going to even on September 12, 2001.
Thats nonsense. I'm from securing all borders including Canada. In addition, we don't have millions of Canadians flooding across our borders in search of welfare, free health care, and food stamps.
Secure the Border. Build a wall. Hail to the brave minutemen!
It's hardly "nonsense"; unlike your replies. :-)
Bush says that he's pro-life, but he signed bills which gave money to Planned Parenthood and the World Health Organization, two groups who perform abortions. Bush's budgets increase spending, with a greater percentage of increase, than Clinton's budgets. The Depts. of HUD, HHS, and Education received at least 28% more in 2004 than in 2001. Bush wants to let some illegal immigrants stay in the U.S. longer. Reagan was conservative, and Bush isn't.
Name one, just ONE, GOP president, in the last 50+ years, who cut spending and didn't "fund" HUD,HHS, and the Department of Education.
Reagan gave BLANKET AMNESTY to ALL illegals and did NOTHING whatsoever to shut down the borders.
Secure the border. Build a wall.
What good is "doing something" when it has the same effect as doing nothing? It's the same thing.
Bush isn't stupid. It's obvious he has no desire to stop illegal aliens from flooding into the country, but he thinks he can pull the wool over our eyes by having "increased electronic surveillance" and "increased numbers of border patrol."
It sure worked with you, though.
I wouldn't describe it that way. In his speech right after the bombing he made it clear why we were there, and why we had to stay. He had every intention of staying and fighting, but in the months that followed things did not go our way. I'm going to post a thread about Reagan and Lebanon in the near future. I've had it with people trashing Reagan. With all his many positives and a few negatives, Reagan's place in history is set. He will be remembered as one of the greats as he already is by many.
By trashing Reagan, you're losing what little support you have for GWB outside of the true believers. It's petty, and makes it look like you have very little positive with which to defend your guy.
Bush is the next Reagan?" Where have I heard it before? Oh yeah, 'Bobby Vee is the next Buddy Holly' and 'Michael Bolton is the next Otis Redding'!
Hee, hee, hee.
Rattling the bots. I love it.
You guys always forget to add that they overstayed their visas and therefore were illegal aliens. (It almost sounds as if you are defending them)
