Like many Americans, I spent the evening of the 2004 election watching the returns on television and wondering how the exit polls, which predicted an overwhelming victory for John Kerry, had gotten it so wrong. By midnight, the official tallies showed a decisive lead for George Bush -- and the next day, lacking enough legal evidence to contest the results, Kerry conceded. Republicans derided anyone who expressed doubts about Bush's victory as nut cases in ''tinfoil hats,'' while the national media, with few exceptions, did little to question the validity of the election. The Washington Post immediately dismissed allegations of fraud as ''conspiracy theories,''(1) and The New York Times declared that ''there is no evidence of vote theft or errors on a large scale.''(2)
But despite the media blackout, indications continued to emerge that something deeply troubling had taken place in 2004. Nearly half of the 6 million American voters living abroad(3) never received their ballots -- or received them too late to vote(4) -- after the Pentagon unaccountably shut down a state-of-the-art Web site used to file overseas registrations.(5) A consulting firm called Sproul & Associates, which was hired by the Republican National Committee to register voters in six battleground states,(6) was discovered shredding Democratic registrations.(7) In New Mexico, which was decided by 5,988 votes,(8) malfunctioning machines mysteriously failed to properly register a presidential vote on more than 20,000 ballots.(9) Nationwide, according to the federal commission charged with implementing election reforms, as many as 1 million ballots were spoiled by faulty voting equipment -- roughly one for every 100 cast.(10)

Wait one damned minute. My mother is an American citizen living in Canada to care for my grandmother. My mom has voted Republican since 1992 from Canada. She pays taxes to the US Treasury.
You should get your facts straight before you crack on citizens who pay taxes and have every right to vote in a presidential election. Jerk.

The Bush campaign in 2004 had a small, young, and very very good staff in Ohio. They put in 90 to 100 hours a week for months on end. They reported directly to Rove and were very very sharp and well trained. Everyone of them I talked to hoped to perform well enough to become the next Karl Rove in a few years.
Ross County Ohio was the bellwether county for Ohio. Both the Bush and Kerry Campaigns told the media that as Ross County went so would Ohio. I was Republican media liaison for Ross County, Ohio. As a result I often needed to confer with Bush campaign staff. I had easy access to the campaign. I had to know what to tell the media. There was a lot of media here. Even the BBC and ITN from Great Britain were here with crews. I was on the British equivelant of 60 Minutes the weekend before the election.
I got told things that perhaps others were not told. The media would sniff something out from some rumor mill and then hit me with it. I would have to get an answer from the Bush Campaign. So I learned a lot during the campaign that others not involved in the broad picture would not have learned.
I was told by the ITN (the British Commercial TV network) staff that the Demorats polled Ohio about 4 days before the election. It showed Bush winning. I has asked an ITN staffer who was going to win.. He replied, "Bush." I asked how he knew,.. He said, "The latest Democrat internal poll showed Bush winning Ohio." He continued, "Whoever wins Ohio wins the election."
Who ever told the ITN reporter about the Democrats internal poll must not have told Kerry. The rumor mill said it was not smart to give Kerry bad news. The rumor mill said it could cost a Kerry staffer his or her job.
That may be why Kerry was ignorant of what the the hired registration people were doing. I think some people in the Campaign had to know that no one can register 100 people a day. It would be like a first baseman hitting 15 home runs in a game where he only came to bat 3 times.
Some Kerry people fairly hight up had to know. They for some reason did not tell anyone above them.
It appears Bush knew what was going on and Kerry did not.
I think you must believe that newspaper reporters want to report the truth.
As a media liason person for the Bush Campaign I can tell you that telling the media something... even with absolute proof is no guarantee that it will be printed. And if it is printed, it very likely will be spun against the Republicans.
Let us say there was absolute proof that Kerry was stealing votes. You take it to the media and show them the proof. The story in the next days paper would lead with
Kerry staffer accuses Bush campaign of dirty tricks. Kerry has demanded that Bush issue a complete appology for his dispicable accusations. A Kerry campaign spokesperson said the Bush accusations that Kerry is stealing votes is just an attempt to trash Kerry and an example of the worst sort of dirty tricks. The Kerry staffer went on to say that it is obvious that the public does not agree with the Bush positions on issues. And as a result Bush is resorting to attacks on Kerry's character. Kerry called on Bush to end the dirty tricks campaign.
That is what you get when you prove things to the media that they do not want to report. They take the story to the Democrats and then make the story the Democrat reaction to the charges.

Bobby Kennedy Jr has a turgid expose at Rolling Stone which purports to blow the lid off the 2004 presidential election by claiming that 350,000 Ohio voters were prevented from reaching the polling stations. This, unsurprisingly, has excited the entire port side of the blogosphere. However, when one begins to read through the argument, supported by a slew of citations but no evidence at all, it sounds like a very tired rehash of all the conspiracy theories we heard between November 2004 and January 2005...Kennedy's lead argument gives readers enough excuse to stop on the first page...And interestingly enough, that's exactly what two research firms looking into the exit poll debacle found...The Confederate Yankee isn't fooled...I note that Kennedy never once mentions Wisconsin, where real election-day dirty tricks and voter fraud occurred and actually resulted in prosecution. Perhaps that's because voter fraud that benefits Democrats fails to interest Kennedy. I look forward to his expose on the 1960 election that made his uncle President. Comments (13)
Thank you and your fellow staffers for your service. It sounds very much like you prevented the Democrats from stealing the election in Ohio. I shudder to think what our situation would now be if Kerry were President. The country owes you a debt of gratitude.

it's kinda funny, given the Chicago/IL voting in 1960, isn't it ? At the time, Nixon was urged to contest that voting, but decided such a challenge would be harmful to the country and conceded. A Son of Chicago's then Mayor ends up heading the Gore challenge in Florida in 2000, and this Kennedy twit (and what IS wrong with his voice?) claims the 2004 election was stolen. They are hopeless.
This is the same lawyer kennedy who was/is advocating slap suits based on environmental "impact" against private individuals.
Essentially ADA for envirowackos. Thus any "individual" could hire a envirowacko group as a court compensated "expert" to sue anyone (corp or individual) for excessive environmental impact and have the target be forced to pay lawyer fees, expert fees, and consultation fees to supervise the corrections.

Given how THE JFK stole the 1960 election it is VERY VERY "rich" for a Kennedy to be fabricating crocodile tears of this election being stolen. Perhaps we should combine and contrast the two "stealings"
