Thirty-seven summers ago, in the swelter of An Hua Basin, Marine Lt. James H. Webb saw more bloodshed and death than most people see in a lifetime.
Since his decorated tenure in Vietnam, Webb has added hitches as President Reagan's Navy secretary, an Emmy-winning journalist and author of best-selling, military-suspense novels to his made-for-the- movies biography.
Why, then, suddenly run this year as a Democrat to unseat Sen. George Allen, a Republican former governor whom Webb endorsed just six years ago?
"When I look at where this administration has taken its own party, I cannot help but think about the pendulum of history," Webb said. "The pendulum has swung, I think, as far as it can swing given the principles this party had once espoused."
Webb says Allen is part of an arrogant Republican majority in Washington bent on repeating in Iraq the blunders that killed so many of his buddies in Vietnam a generation ago.
He accuses President Bush, whom he backed in 2000, of betraying conservative fiscal governance by pushing the federal debt toward $9 trillion. He claims the GOP, his former party, and Allen in particular are Bush's eager accomplices.
"We really need to get back to a time when the members of Congress will stand up to an administration that is abusing its constitutional privileges," Webb said.
Allen campaign spokesman Dick Wadhams dismissed Webb's criticism with a chuckle, a rhetorical question his only reply: "So is Jim Webb still a Democrat today or did he switch back over to being a Republican?"

I've got to call BS on this. Webb has been a 'RAT for many, many moons. He was bashing Republicans before President Bush got elected.
That's crap in every way possible. The Iraq operation is absolutely necessary unless you think that we should allow people to poison the US Senate office building with anthrax and go unpunished, and George Allen is the best the republican party has right now. He's definitely not part of any sort of an "arrogant elite" or any such.
Allen likes his chewin tebacci though.....
Iraq is NOTHING like Vietnam - NOTHING!

Webb just had Opinion Journal publish a piece by him about his five favorite books.
One of the Books he recommended, and I agree on the choice, is "The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman. I wrote this response to Opinon Journal, which they published:
That's being Arrogant?
I've always believed that Allen shouldn't run for re-election. Soon after 2006 everybody's going to be gearing up for 2008. Better to take some months off, spend some time with the family, formulate policy and take some trips through the heartland. It's not like the Senate is in danger of losing its Republican majority, since one exists in name only.
I might be tempted to vote for him if he was running to unseat Warner (who's a Democrat in Republican clothing).
But he has fouled himself up by his claims. He just wants to get in on Kaine's tails.
More garbage coming from another DemonRat,Webb.
The real reason is that Webb HAS to run as a Rat, because he comes with baggage that means he could never run as a Republican ... so he joined the party of Willie Jeff, a/k/a Cold Hard Case a/k/a Dollah Bill; Tom Dodd, a/k/a Censure? The Idiots in KonneKtiKut Will Just Reelect me; Adam Clayton Powell, the Congressman from Bimini; Bobby "Big Bird" Byrd, a/k/a the Grand Wizard of the KKK, etc. He seems to fit right in with that crowd.
This is one the dems new plans. They think we're so stupid that we cannot tell the difference between a patriot in a uniform .. and a pretender in a uniform (aka John Kerry). I think they've already lost several races trying to pull off this scam.
The next plan is "pretend Christians" - again assuming that if you can talk the talk - they don't have to walk the walk. And .. of course .. they still think we're too stupid to figure that out.
He and Sestak seem to be cut from the same jib. If given the chance they will expose their inner Howard Dean. Both have widely known reputations for their tempers. A heckler, or former peer giving some less than flattering information, will bring it out. Guaranteed.
Apparently what Webb learned from 9/11 is that when someone declares war on us we should wait for them to kill thousands of Americans before we respond in kind. If I am wrong and that is not Webb's position, how does one explain Webb's opposition to going to war against a regime (i.e. Iraq) that was routinely firing missiles at our pilots before we responded by going to war against them.
Webb says Allen is part of an arrogant Republican majority in Washington bent on repeating in Iraq the blunders that killed so many of his buddies in Vietnam a generation ago.
Democrat Lyndon Johnson is the primary cause of 58,000 soliders being killed in action in Vietnam, and many many more being wounded. He second guessed our generals, and he failed to take decisive action against the Communists. If Democrat LBJ were in the White House on 9/11/01, Saddam Hussein would still be torturing and murdering, and the terrorists would still have a base of operations in Afghanistan. President Bush has great courage, he took decisive action, and as a result we have liberated 50 million people (Iraq + Afghanistan).
By the way, the U.S. ultimately prevailed in Vietnam, and President Nixon and Secretary of State Kissinger negotiated a cease fire. But later Congress cut off assistance for South Vietnam, and the Communists moved back into the South and massacred hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese, plus Cambodians.
Now Democrats want to repeat this scenario. They want to cut and run from Iraq, taking a cue from Hanoi Kerry, Hanoi Jane, and the other traitors. Democrats want to waste the lives of almost 3,000 of our troops who have fought to keep us free and safe here at home. If the current Democrats "leaders" had been at Valley Forge with General Washington, they would have cut and run. The Democrats are lowly, base, immoral, and obscene.
W-E-B-B
BTW, there have been 1950 deaths by hostile action, 514 by non-hostile action for a total of 2464 deaths in Iraq to date. Let's not help the ENEMEDIA.
