The best war movie ever, IMHO, was 'Twelve O'Clock High'.

But 'We Were Soldiers' is pretty good too.

I recently saw Hal Moore on the MIL channel. He was talking about the Huey's role in the fight and finally getting back to HQ.

Into the OC he went, dirty and bloody. The club manager asked him to leave as he was not dressed properly.

Moore, calmly, pulled out his .45 and asked for a couple gin and tonics. Then looked at the camera and said, "I wished the manager said no. I was looking to shoot the place up !"

Talk about the right stuff !!!

Thanks to all who served. You all had - and have - the right stuff.

Thanks. Will turn on the TV for the first time and maybe three or four months. This may save its life.

Thank you for this post today and the links to others. I'm adding it to my documents so I can go back and read every word. After briefly scanning them, I believe the comments contained in them are the most poignant I have ever read.

Thank you and all our military past and present, you are all among America's finest.

"Tragically, an even harder reality to face is that a carefully placed cadre of Americans are consumed with the same hatred and they occupy positions from the highest Supreme Court to the journalist's desk to the corridors of public schools. Their hatred is more subtly masked and thus more insidious in its devastation. Too many good Americans go along like puppets, refusing to acknowledge that evil exists for they would then have to face it in themselves."

Thanks for referring me to that wonderful thread.

I was born and raised a Liberal. In high school, the smartest people were a bunch of pot smokers. Only in recent years as it dawned on me that the leader of that group was probably the son of Communists. By the end of high school, I was a sort of Radical---only I had absorbed too much information about America to buy the biggest lies.

I remember what it was like, for me. Like almost all little boys of the 50s, I grew up assuming I would go to war one day. Since I was not brave, I worried quite a bit about the possibility that I would not be brave enough when the time came for combat. However, I was hoping for the best.

Then I remember reading a Left Wing pamphlet in high school. I'm sure it was one of the most famous ones, but I just can't quite pull the details out of my memory. The essential idea was that the war in Vietnam was wrong.

There was some logic in the pamphlet and an attempt to argue as persuasively as possible. The person who wrote it was intelligent. I believe he may have been a veteran of our Special Forces. But looking back, it is clear that the real appeal of this pamphlet for me was that it meant I would not need to face combat. I never saw this until many years later.

I just want to thank all of our Vietnam vets for their service this Memorial Day. And while I have no real right to say it, I sincerely hope that those of you who are troubled may yet find a purpose that will bring you joy.

I never watch a movie on commercial TV. Too many commercials and they overdub any obscenities, even if the obscenities are appropriate to the plot.

The unforgettable "WE WERE SOLDIERS" ending Hymn...

'THE MANSIONS OF THE LORD'

...is also now known as the...

"REAGAN RECESSIONAL"

...having been lovingly sung as our former President's American Flag draped coffin was being carried from his National Cathedral Funeral Service in Washington, D.C., thusly:

"To fallen soldiers let us sing,
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing,
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord.

No more weeping,
No more fight,
No friend bleeding through the night,
Just DRVINE EMBRACE,
ETERNAL LIGHT,
In the Mansions of the Lord.

Where no mothers cry
And no children weep,
We shall stand and guard
Though the angels sleep,
Oh, through the ages let us keep
The Mansions of the Lord"

Lyrics: RANDALL WALLACE
Music: NICK GLENNIE-SMITH

AMEN

I wonder if BlackHawk Down is on this weekend. Does anyone know. That is a real good action movie and really illustrates the sacrifice of some very brave American Soldiers.

BlackHawk Down teaches the meaning of really being prepared.

The American Soldiers are truly heroes. Many Americans do not appreciate the terrible sacfrifices they have made over the years in many different places, but many millions of Americans do.

One of my favorites! and CSM Plumley is my idol!! Too bad the CSM's of todays Army can't be more like him. And, along those lines, in my 20+ years in the Army (as a soldier and a spouse) I have only met one commander's wife that is of the same caliber as Mrs. Moore, may she rest in peace.
