White House compares illegal immigration to speeding
The Examiner ^ | May 26, 2006 | Bill Sammon

Posted on 05/26/2006 2:31:43 PM PDT by VU4G10

WASHINGTON - The White House on Friday said a Senate bill that would grant legal status to illegal immigrants is analogous to a traffic law that allows a speeder to pay a fine and continue driving.

"If you had a traffic ticket and you paid it, you're not forever a speeder, are you?" White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said in response to questions from The Examiner.

"So the fact is, you have paid your debt to society," he added. "And we have come up with a way to make sure that the debt to society gets paid. Then you move forward."

The "traffic ticket" analogy raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill, where many House Republicans regard illegal immigration as a grave crime.

"I don't know if Tony meant to trivialize it or not," said Will Adams, spokesman for Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo. "But it's certainly misleading."

"The penalty for a speeding ticket is a fine," he added. "The penalty for being here illegally is being removed from this country. But the president doesn't want illegal aliens to go home."

Snow emphasized that illegals would have to pay fines, learn English and wait years for a chance at full citizenship. But Adams called that "a slap on the hand" compared to deportation.

"Here's a more apt analogy," he said. "You get stopped for speeding, and you say to the cop: "Hey listen, you're about to give me a $300 ticket. How about we make it 20 bucks and just call it even?"

Snow predicted that House Republicans would eventually drop their opposition to the Senate bill, which passed Thursday. The bill, which includes a guest worker program that would grant legal status to aliens, is headed to a conference committee for possible reconciliation with a House bill aimed at beefing up border security.

Snow suggested the guest worker program could be sold to even ardent opponents like Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisconsin, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

"Chairman Sensenbrenner, who's got some real problems with various aspects, has said publicly that the temporary worker program has merit," Snow said.

"There are areas in which members of the House are going to agree with the president," he added. "I certainly don't want to be speaking for Chairman Sensenbrenner, but the fact is, you know politics."

But Sensenbrenner appeared unmoved.

"What's going on now, in calling it a pathway to citizenship or earned legalization, is not honest because it is amnesty," he said at a news conference.

Anyone who has visited a city in Mexico knows that most of the homes have bars on the windows and doors and that it's unsafe for anyone to walk the streets at night, it will soon be the same way here.
I'm not saying that all Mexican's are criminals but many are and the proof is there if anyone is willing to take a look.

You do realize that if this bill passes, there is no more America - let alone conservative cause.

Another border hysteric. The way you talk, one would think that the Senate bill enrolls 12-20 million new heavily Democratic voters, and opens the floodgates to 100-200 million or so more immigrants.

Many times conservatives have warned that something was the start of a slippery slope, and were regarded as alarmist. More often than not, they've been proven at least 100% correct (sometimes things have gotten even worse than what the conservatives warned about).

Who's being hysterical?

Whit House press Release

White House just announced:

We like the steaming pile that the senate passed and now we have every intention of strongarming the house until it passses more or less untouched. For all you idiot rubes out there that don't think this is exactly what we are going to do, we urge you to remember how we forced CAFTA through over your objections.

You see we don't care what you think, not in the least, our constituency is the big corporations and the transnational organzations like the UN and the NGOs.

Don't like it tough, who are you gonna vote for a Democrat? Just remember they'll make abortions and gay weddings mandatory, they'll come after your chitlun's. And anyway they would advocate much the same plan, may even make it easier to get gun control laws passed that we claim not to support. Third party? *snort* ha,ha, that would just be a vote for the democrats.

And After all, we can't forget that some guy that's been in a Marine for 26 years is not an American when we clearly have laws on the books naturalizing any such person after 4 years. But you uneducated, hick, rubes, that call yourselves conservatives are too stupid to know that.

Of course, this would be if the White House suddenly had an attack of brutally honesty.

Tony is right on here! The absurd exaggerations regarding the crime of illegal immigration by the far right are distorted and WAY out of the mainstream.

If you drive without a license you are guilty every time you drive (if you MUST diminish the issue). To be here in violation of the law is an ONGOING violation.

But if you hate America and think that our laws are to be laughed at (and violations thereof paid for by REAL citizens), mere logic is no doubt insufficient.

The thing is that for sarcasm to be effective, it has to be nearly believable. So, not everyone will realize it is sarcasm. One can add sarcasm tags, but they are wimpy, distracting, and ruin all the fun. Ultimately, therefore, it is up to the reader to discern the sarcasm.

Actually it's not.

While it is illegal to sneak across the border or overstay a visa, there is NO LAW ANYWHERE that says staying in this country is a crime, afterwards.

That is WHY the House was trying to pass a law making it a felony. Presently it is not a crime under our laws.

Just another 2004 sign-up, seminar poster, paid opinion shaper, democratic operative and/or, (what's the other label?, oh yeah) minion of Hillary!

I still chuckle with the thought that this was the 'bots primary defense. Guess they've become hip to the real situation (what's been claiming all along): the 99-1 anti-amnesty ratio of phone calls being rec'd by Congress.

If you had any comprehension skills, I wouldn't have to make the point.

You didn't even attempt to make a point.
Instead you pasted a link to some reading assignment as if I'm supposed to do your homework for you.

Forget it.
You know me. I'm not shy. I am more than glad to challenge anything you post.
So when you come up with an argument, get back to me.
