House Speaker Not Under Investigation: Justice (Hastert Victim of Drive-by Media)
Reuters ^ | Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Posted on 05/24/2006 5:39:59 PM PDT by kristinn

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday denied a report that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI in connection with a corruption probe.

ABC News, citing high level Justice Department sources, said information implicating Hastert had been developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government.

But department officials, who asked to not be identified, said the story was not accurate and that Hastert was not under investigation. "The story is wrong. Hastert is not under investigation," one official said.

I think this is the first salvo to try and get the senate immigration bill passed. if the republican house leadership cracks up, they will never be able to stand their ground.

Remember, its not the evidence of a crime, but the nature of the charge that counts.

ABC will be vindicated, just like Dan Rather. I hope!

Good thinking, Dog! There are leakers in DOJ, too. Ashcroft knew he had a lot of moles in Justice, and although he transferred quite a few people into less-sensitive positions, he couldn't have caught them all.

I was thinking along the same lines, but I was wondering if it was a trap for Pelosi. Your idea makes much more sense.

I don't trust him to do even that.

The GOP has a serious leadership problem.

Yeah...the reporter was the key for me.....sent up the red flags. Brian Ross wrote about reporters phone numbers being watched last week in the leak cases....someone might be trying to play with him now....feed him a bad piece of info to discredit his reports.

"The GOP has a serious leadership problem."

There hasn't been any leadership in Congress since Gingrich and Lott. As soon as the GOP got a minority they immediately started acting like the minority party, while the Democrats learned how to the the minority party over night.

BS. This is a turf battle. I too think Hastert is talking out of his butt however, he has not defended Jefferson in any way. Why in the hell would he? You got caught with your pants down and are now busy trying to get behind something while you pull them back up. Hastert will back away from is tantrum very quickly now and he knows he has jumped the shark but it wasn't because he had something to hide or that he is somehow in bed with Jefferson.

It will probably turn out to be his having a hissy fit because he didn't receive a courtesy call from the FBI before the search.

It seems to be quite obvious, this political maneuver (probably White House) to put pressure on the House to make some serious concessions to pass the Senate version of the immigration bill. This is politics, plain and simple politics.

If it's true, run him out of office and let justice be done.

That is exactly what it was according to some GOP committee chair on Gibson's show tonight. Judge whatever his name is just laughed and said to the effect "welcome to the real world Congressman. It would have been against federal law to give ANYONE a heads up". Hastert really messed up with this one but I really take issue with how the knee jerkers on FR were taking an understandable "turf war" issue and turning it into yet another "GOP is evil and heads should roll" canard.

BECAUSE HE IS SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE! He is charged with jealously guarding the independence of the body he leads. He is WRONG BUT he has a plausible rationale.

I wonder why it is nobody ever wants to be identified?

The denial has a warm body attached to it as opposed to the accusation.....

From the AP article posted in #65....

The statement by department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos came in response to a report by ABC News that Hastert was under investigation by the FBI to determine his role in a public corruption probe centered around convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff....

Pressed by reporters, Scolinos said: "Speaker Hastert is not under investigation by the Justice Department."

Savage won't apologize because he's a drive-by moron. He'll rant and rave about something else.

Maybe this whole fiasco will teach Hastert a lesson about jumping into something like he did on the FBI investigation.

If he thought that would get him points anywhere, well, he's so wrong.

The dems and media still hate him and are using his activism in this matter to imply he's involved and that's why he protested.

The conservatives are appalled and annoyed that he would defend an obvious crook like Jefferson on whatever pretext.

Even Jefferson probably isn't speaking to him.

Hah!
