- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...
"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.
And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption... Not gonna do it lady. We'll build fuzzbusters, radar detectors and stealth systems on our cars. Keep it at 55mph and we'll generate Klingon claoking systems to get past that.
55 is insane.

This really seems like a political tin ear.
Is anyone nostalgic for that vile law?
I'm ... amazed.
If she runs for President on this platform, she might carry New York.

I've got an idea, Hillary. If driving a mere 55 actually does save gas, then why not just recommend that people do it on their own? If I can get from point A to point B on less gas by driving slower, then isn't the onus on me to drive slower because it's in my own best interests, and not on government to force me, under threat of fines, to drive slower?
While you're at it, how about outlawing throwing rice at weddings? It wastes rice! I could save money on rice by not throwing it at weddings, but since I'm too stupid to act in my own best interests, why not use the law to force me to do it?
LIBERALISM: The Democrats think you're stupid enough to need it!

I thought of the Carter years also. Wasn't it Carter that implemented conservation plans like the 55 mph speed limit and the the paper conservation plan to "use both sides of the paper when you wipe" plan.We were living in Italy during the Carter years, so I missed out on most of this. Both sides?

Where I live, if people would just keep it below 80 that would be a major improvement.

I certainly am interested in hearing anything Bill Clinton's Moral Compass has to say about changing what it means to be a human being in the 21st century (as she so charmingly described her social engineering agenda during her co-presidency).

It really makes no sense, most of her comments lately make no sense.
It makes sense to her constituents in New York City, where you can't legally drive more than 50 on the highways and parkways within the city, and need to drive way out of town in order to legally drive more than 55. Many New Yorkers have a myopic world view - if we can't drive fast because of traffic, it must mean that no one else is able to drive fast in the rest of the country.
Never mind that the local speed limits are already set artificially low in order to generate revenue for the state. Never mind that in a rational state like Texas, they are proposing to RAISE the speed limit in wide open West Texas to 80 because *gasp that's the speed people drive in the middle of nowhere *gasp* and it doesn't make sense to criminalize normal driving behavior.

Yeah, maybe she could come out for even/odd gas-buying days.
She's truly desperate to get herself positioned on the price of gasoline issue.

like Rush said earlier today, how long until she tells us to start wearing sweaters, and to tape clear trash bags over the windows to stop the air leaks?

Revenue from speeding tickets? But I thought the idea behind this measure was to save people money!

Didn't Carter try to offer the Ayatollah helpful energy-saving tips in exchange for the hostages? I don't think it worked.
