DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE WORKED TO DEFEAT NAGIN

**Exclusive**

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) secretly placed political operatives in the city of New Orleans to work against the reelection efforts of incumbent Democrat Mayor Ray Nagin, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean made the decision himself to back mayoral candidate and sitting Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu (D-LA), sources reveal.

Dean came to the decision to back the white challenger, over the African-American incumbent Nagin, despite concerns amongst senior black officials in the Party that the DNC should stay neutral.

The DNC teams actively worked to defeat Nagin under the auspice of the committee's voting rights program.

The party's field efforts also coincided with a national effort by Democrat contributors to support Landrieu.

Landrieu had outraised Nagin by a wide margin - $3.3 million to $541,980.

Preliminary campaign finance reports indicate many of Landrieu’s contributions came from out of state white Democrat leaders and financiers, including a $1,000 contribution from Sen. Ben Nelson's (D-NE) PAC.

The defeat of Mitch Landrieu is the latest setback for Dean's often criticized field operation.

In his victory speech late Saturday night, Nagin praised President Bush.

"You and I have probably been the most vilified politicians in the country. But I want to thank you for moving that promise that you made in Jackson Square forward," Nagin said.

The Landrieu's wanted their hands in that pot of money.

This will surely make it more difficult for Mary Landrieu not having brother there as Mayor.

The election blew up in the Democrat's faces.

Mitch Landrieu would have stepped in as NO mayor and then challenge Blanco next year for governor.

Now Mitch is weakened and Blanco is stronger, which means it well may be a Jindal vs. Blanco race and Blanco has a 35% approval rating. In addition, the Landrieus and Dean have angered Nagin and Orleans Parish blacks which will hurt Democrats in 2007 and 2008.

Now the Democrats must hope for is John Breaux to run for governor.

First Howie hacked off the gays and now the blacks.

I can't understand why more blacks don't consider the GOP. Vouchers would save their kids from really bad publik skoolz.

Bro is the Lt. Governor at this time. Doubtful Nagin is going to allow him to get too close to the funds.

Unlikely BlankO will be re-elected.

Most likely Jindal. It remains to be seen if he has the guts to take on the corrupt establishment in Louisiana.

I certainly wish the black voters would get a clue about how they are being used

That really bothers me. The black voters will stay on the plantation, ignoring this episode.

I know SchoolBusNagin is just a looney leftist whiner, but that should fit right in with the dems' game plan. Why would they want to get rid of him? Did they think they could control Landrieu (and, of course, the huge hunk of cash to NO) more than SchoolBus?

Heh heh. This story keeps getting better and better. First Nagin thanks Bush in his acceptance speech and now it turns out that Dean was behind Nagin's opponent's failing campaign. Next thing you know Mary Landrieu will be voted out of office.
