WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales admitted yesterday it's "just not clear" if his Mexican-immigrant grandparents settled in the U.S. legally.
The nation's top cop - who is the first Hispanic attorney general - has become a pointman for the White House on divisive immigration reforms President Bush is pushing.
"Three of my grandparents were born in Mexico. They came to Texas," Gonzales told CNN.
Pressed by Wolf Blitzer, Gonzales conceded he didn't know if they sneaked across the border like millions of illegals at issue in the current debate.
"It's unclear. It's unclear," Gonzales said. "And I've looked at this issue, I've talked to my parents about it, and it's just not clear."
Gonzales has often cited his grandparents' Mexican heritage and his dirt-poor upbringing in Texas in a big family headed by his migrant worker parents.
"My grandparents were Mexican immigrants. I remember visiting them as a very young boy - there was no telephone in their house, no television, no running hot water," Gonzales said during a naturalization ceremony for new citizens in December.
Gonzales is the latest in a series of Washington politicians to talk about their immigrant heritage.
Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) recently recalled how his illegal Italian-immigrant mother was arrested by the feds in 1943.

You know this story is probally very complicated for several reasons. Before , I believe 1920 I think the immigration policies were a tad different. People sort of just showed up. So to say if his all Grandparents showed up legally might be sort of a tough call depending when they arrived. I suspect in a few cases that might be why its not "clear"
This explains the Attorney General's position on Row v. Wade.
I would not be bothered at all by those sneaking in to make a living, if they were disqualified from medical, welfare and driving priveleges. We now live in a socialist state, and the cost to keep illegals taken care of is too much to bear. I have seen studies that say that a vast majority of citizens, take more money from the govt, than they pay in taxes. Telling people that illegals put more into the economy than they take out is therefore a lie.
I wonder if their "Illegal" immigrant ancestors came in Waving a Mexican and an Italian Flag ???????
Therein lies just as big a problem as the border...and that problem is mostly driven by the states. I see some folks from California complaining about the open border but NOT outraged that their counties and state literally protect illegal immmigrants and provide them handsome benefits.
In 1921 the first quota law was enacted.
But when we tried to cut them off from those benefits a few years back, we were slapped down by the federal courts.
It matters not a whit at this point if Gonzalez' parents swam the Rio Grande, came over on the Mayflower or were delivered here by alien spaceship. The Attorney General has an obligation to enforce the laws equally and without bias.
