President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

Groucho Marx? ZZZZT, wrong answer.

Actually I am old enough. I got my shows mixed up. Pluck your magic twanger froggie was from the Buster Brown show, which I used to watch all the time as a kid. Groucho had the duck that dropped down with the magic word. Got my ducks and frogs mixed up. Thanks for catching that for me. Hope Vicomte 13 reads this to know it was from Buster Brown and not Groucho Marx, although I could hear Groucho saying the froggie phrase w/emphasis on sexual innuendo, as he was a bit of a dirty old man.

I agree somewhat with your take on the speech. I do not share your application of the selected Scriptures here, however, Most of those verses deal with individual conduct rather than national policy. It is the same as using the Sermon on the Mount to overthrow capital punishment.

When I see the disregard many Mexican nationals have for the USA, I think of the difficulty Israel had with alien cultures in the first chapter of Judges. That national crisi is followed by Judges 2:3, "They will be thorns in your side and their gods shall be a snare tro you."

I do not believe those in this country that cherish Mexico and disdain the USA should be rounded up, jailed, or abused, but I DO believe that God has allowed them to become thorns in our side.

Colorado Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo said he welcomed increased enforcement, "but if the president thinks by taking one step forward with enforcement the House will follow him two steps backwards with amnesty, he's confusing us with the Senate."

To you and All who believe we could build a wall easily, and those who note there is a wall around the white house.

We couldn't build a wall around New Orleans in 9 months, but you think we can build a wall around our country in a year and a half?

This isn't some 4-foot rock wall. In order to be effective, it has to be better than the wall at the White House. That wall just stops people long enough for the guards to shoot them, and people get over that wall all the time.

The wall you would need to stop people without guards would be much harder than building a levee. It would be expensive, ugly, and take a long time and a lot of materials.

And it wouldn't stop immigrants from using hot air balloons. What, you say, they never used hot air balloons -- that's because they didn't have to.

No wall will help if you don't also put guards on, or use electronic monitoring. And if you do those things, you don't really need a wall if you have a dozen miles of desert.

People break out of prisons.

Windsong, with all due respect, what and who are you talking about?

First of all if and when France gets their brass ones back in place as in the legendary times of the French Foreign Legion, terrorists will have at least one regret. Mon Dieux!

"Actually, Congress is the chief problem for me and many other FReepers. As much as we all dislike the RINOs, we still must maintain our majority in both houses."

I don't see what many can't understand about the 2006 elections.

President Bush isn't going to run again. Everyone that votes will be voting for their own state Congress and Senate Representatives.

You pick the most conservative ones on the ballot in your state.

Everyone whining about congress-critters from another state will be out of luck to change that.
All anyone can do is pick the best running on the ballot in their own state.

It is true he said he will not sign legislation that proposes amnesty. It is also true that he proposed a new temporary worker program and increasing the number of green cards. Green cards can lead to citizenship. There was no mention of how many in each of these catagories will be authorized. He also took no position on the number of immigrants that will be allowed legally to enter the USA each year. The Senate bill proposes to double the limit to 2,000,000 per year.

Right. That's just what my gut tells me. Also, I am not beyond believing that some Republicans who have been gutless wonders to this point will start to pull their spines out of the closet, dust them off, and start using them when they see that there is a real and clear American majority that is 20% or more over the full Conservative base that supports good strong border security and deportating of illegals.

It is my belief that to this point, many or most Republicans have been so afraid of being called racists by the democrats, they have been unwilling to stand up and do what most of the conservative voters want them to do, when they should have been more afraid of what Conservative voters will do to them if they don't put up REAL border security legislation, and told the libs to take a flying leap with their baseless racist name calling. I think this has the potential to change as it becomes more and more clear that 70% or more of American citizens, not just Conservatives, but 70% of ALL Americans, want real border security and want the illegals deported, period. Some Republicans are bound to realize that, and all the calls and letters from their consituants won't hurt. As they do, that will help the conservative majority also, and I really believe this is not a possibility, but a certainty. The question is, how many Republicans will figure out that it's better to listen to us, the real majority of Americans, the conservative majority, than to listen to the liberal minority and their liberal media lapdogs. That remains to be seen. This is just what I think though. :)

I think this below should be a bumper sticker. :)

Israel's wall is mostly unmanned, and very effective.

It has been put up in the space of a few years.

The cost to put an Israeli-style wall on the Mexican border would be about $8 billion, and a lot of money would be saved.

Sure, SOME people would get over or around any barrier.

But not 3 million a year. A few thousand a year.

Resisting the wall doesn't make sense.
The BorderBots want it so badly, and it's not very expensive. It might just work very, very well, as Israel's wall has worked.
So, why all the resistance?

Nonetheless, if Pubbies want to blame folks for the result you are predicting, let them blame the president and the Rhino traitors, not the people who cannot stomach the wrong doers. Don't blame the victims.

The President is ONE man and the only president in DECADES who's taking on this no win situation ... he'll get pummeled from both sides ..he can't win, don't you see that? And yet he's got the spine to suffer the attacks all sides, and take it on in a reasoned way for the greatest good possible.

He DOESN'T control Congress .. YOU do .. with your activism, your commitment, your voice in your CongressCritter's ear and mailbox, and you're NOT a victim, if you exercise your precious vote in the spirit of what and who's your authentic representative of what's right for US .... a vote brave men and women are bleeding and dying tonight to preserve for YOU.

If you throw away this privilege, you're part of the problem, and you do it at your (and all of our) peril.

We'll see who is laughing when 12 million new Democrats register to vote.

The president made no mention of any increase in citizenship quotas.
