President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

Was the Bracero program started in 1942 "amnesty" according to your definition?

He has had these views for years.

"Family values don't stop at the Rio Grande"
from his 2000 campaign.

"I do hope you listened to the president's speech with an OPEN mind. IF you are so opposed to the guest worker program...what exactly is your solution?"

Illegals are not guests by definition. Guests are invited.

All of what he said is rhetoric! Nothing much will be done, and in 10 years, another truly conservative plan will come along to fix this mistake and next time we will have 36,000,000 to deal with in the streets. I am so disappointed with all of you for trading your values and principles to have a party that doesn't represent your values and principles (except the Republicans in the House of Representatives) stay in power. Shame, shame, shame!

an American workforce is too expensive.

And why is that? Because of excess regulation and taxation on employers. People who've never run a small business have absolutely no idea how expensive manpower can be. The check my employees receive is NOT the sum total of what they actually cost me.

hope your first in line to be a Foster parent to all the children that are now American citizens when there parents are deported"

"The law, I believe, says they deport with their parents until they reach the age of majority. That's how it works with LEGAL immigrants...."

The problems is you cant forcibly deport American citizens. These kid call them "anchor babies" if you want are as American as you , me and Ollie North. IF people want to change that for future children thats fine but its not the current situation. Plus what does this country have to benefit by having these kids go to Mexico till they are 18. From what I have heard the Mexican public school system is not first rate.

The down side to the President's guest worker proposal is that it would put 20 million illegals on the path to citizenship. Upon becoming citizens, they would be able to bring relatives into the country. The measures the President has proposed to control immigration are too weak to effectively control the flow of illegal aliens. In another few years, we will have x million more illegals within our borders. Reagan's plan did not work in 1986, and Bush's plan will not work in 2006.

The net effect of this plan will be to ensure, within a decade, millions more Democratic voters and ensure a possibly permanent liberal majority in the country. Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and even Texas and Oklahoma may tip permanently into the Democratic camp as California did in the 1990s.

By that time, the Bushes will have retired to a safe, gated community somewhere, where they can do the charity ball/country club circuit for the remainder of their days. The rest of us who cannot afford that lifestyle, especially those of us in the Southwest, will have to witness our English-speaking, middle class world transformed into the newest outpost of the Third World.

I listened to every word very carefully and did NOT hear him mention the word ILLEGAL when he was talking about the wounded marine.

what exactly is your solution?

Easy. A felon is a felon; without regard to how long they have been a felon. First, we severely fine any and all business hiring illegals. Bankruptcy is the intent.

Secondly, anyone here illegally has a choice, leave the country and obtain a Guest Worker Permit, and return legally, or have their assets and property seized and they are then focibly ejected - permanently.

Try pulling the illegal immigrant stunt in Mexico, and see what happens. Try this in China, Europe, Middle East, or any other country on the face of the planet. Why do we have different laws in dealing with Hispanics than we have for Asians, Blacks or Caucasians? If a Cuban can evade our border guards and Coast Guard, they get automatic citizenship. Are Hispanics mentally deficient, such that they are extended special circumstances out of pity? This doesn't apply to Canadians, IceLanders, GreenLanders or any other country on the planet. Why Cuba? If Cuba, why not Mexico?

This is a country of immigrants, and the Statue of Liberty was erected to commerate those who come here LEGALLY with the intent to start a new life. But, a vast number of these people have no loyalty to the USA; they only want a paycheck. There is no loyalty, no intent to start a new life; only the desire to cash in on the Gringo's.

I guess you missed "going to the back of the line."

Which line? The Legal Immigrant line? No, it grants instant legal status to all 11 million. THAT IS AN AMNESTY.

Do you think these people give a rat's ass about being a citizen? And even if they did, which citizenship line? The Hong King line? That is 15 years long.

"Back of the line" is as stupid and useless term as "guest worker program."

Which is almost as stupid as having thousands of National Guardsman that CAN'T DO ANYTHING BUT STAND AND STARE! If an illegal walks right up to a Guardsman on the Border, the illegal can tell the Guardsman's mama a pinche gavrone and just walk casually to San Diego. The Guardsman CAN'T DO SQUAT. Except phone up the Border Patrol WHICH THE MINUTEMEN WILL DO FOR FREE!!

From National Review:

Partial Victory? [Mark Krikorian] JPod: What victory, partial or otherwise? The only new thing in the speech was sending some unarmed National Guard troops to help the Border Patrol shuffle paper. The more appropriate headline would be "More Mush from the Wimp." Posted at 9:10 PM

Yep.

Well, it's over.

If the President gets his way, there will be amnesty by another name and no border wall, or there will be status quo as Congress is unable to agree on a comprehensive bill. Either way, the US border stays effectively open.

Now there is noplace for the BorderBots to go.
You'll either swallow hard and vote for the GOP to keep them in power and preserve the OTHER things you care about (Iraq, taxes, abortion, judges), or you will walk away from them and find a party...or found a party...that represents you.

It will be an individual choice for each BorderBot.

I had a guy who worked for me who had the same thing happen to his kid. Kid got mixed up with drugs, spent a couple of years in the slammer, and when he got out, the only job he could get was riding on the back of the trash truck. Not very swanky, but at least he could support himself.

Then the Mexicans showed up, and he was laid off.
Had to go back to live with his Dad. Whats he supposed to do for a living? Go back to crime? This crap really does happen out in the real world.

But I suppose you don't know or care, back behind the walls of your gated community, living amongst the "right" people. Have fun on the golf course tomorrow. Don't forget to say 'hola' to Pepe on the lawnmower.

You seriously think I have to know exactly how many illegal aliens were in the country in 1942 before I can make an analogy? I know how many were "expelled" in 1942. Does that qualify?

How about if the "guest workers" were forced to return to their home countries to apply for the program?

Other considerations. Tuberculosis is on the rise. Measles in on the rise. Bacterial diphtheria is on the rise in the USA. Protozoal diseases...Entamoeba histolytica, Balantidium coli is on the rise.

In the veteranarian world, brucellosis, which was essentiall erradicated in this country decades ago is breaking out due to Mexican beef entering the country. Bovine tuberculosis is on the rise.

If our legislators want this demographic to enter this country, at least force these interlopers to abide by our laws. But they will not do this for fear of a loss of a vote. They love the vote more than America.
