President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim

Agreed ... taking a first courageous step into the minefield of public opinion on an extraordinarly complicated issue. As much as people would like to paint it as a black and white issue, it's not.

God knows he's dealing with problems that have been in the making for decades and compounded the numbers involved exponentially ... and a problem scrupulously avoided avoided by other presidents. God bless him for making a reasoned attempt to create solutions ... HE COULD'VE DONE NOTHING .. LIKE PRESIDENTS BEFORE HIM.

Your virtual threat is as about as effective as a virtual fence.

Was the Bracero program started in 1945 "amnesty"?

How many illegals were there in the US in 1945?

If you listened to this speech, you would not be responding like a lib.

He changed on the National Guard and Increasing Border Patrol.

He changed on fencing.

Anyone who thought he would eliminate a gest worker element of his proposal is borderline retarded.

I will not hand the COngress over to liberals in 2006.

I do not hate the troops enough to do that.

So, should I assume you're not a federal taxpayer? I can't imagine why anyone would think illegals entering the country aren't causing a huge problem for the country....unless they weren't paying the bill.

5-15-2006: President George Bush - "The US must protect its borders."

A bold statement!

"Viva Mexico" was apparently left on the cutting room floor

So was God bless America, I thought that was strange.

On the whole I'd give him a C+ but let us see what the actions "say". One thing I'd like to know is what is a "substantial" penalty, 'cause the two grand I've been hearing is NOT substantial.

What do you say about Tancredo's point...How are securing the border and a guest worker program linked?

I think there are some who will NEVER be pleased no matter WHAT ATTEMPTS are made...This problem has been around for far too long and atleast SOMETHING is trying to be done about it now...Will it be enough? I don't know, but I sure know one thing - the democrats sure as heck aren't going to fix it, so atleast we can support our reps and keep on sending suggestions and always offer to help volunteer with money or time with the Minutemen.

AGREED!!!

I believe the minutemen tried to do that....but the government turned them into Vincente Fox.

LOL! Score another one for the Dems and the MSM. Some folks will believe anything when it suits their purpose.

I know what has been the overwhelming advocacy here, because I am in favor of it 100 percent. I was referring to the more radical among us who will settle for nothing less than deportation. And, yes, they are here in droves.

The anchor baby thing really is a big issue.

What is this "anchor baby" issue? And is this part of the House or Senate bills?
