May 15, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In his live, nationally televised address tonight, President Bush will tell Americans that it's impossible to deport the estimated 11 million illegal aliens living here.
"We must reject amnesty, but recognize that it is not realistic to round up millions of people and send them home," said White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri in a preview of Bush's speech.
She said Bush plans to spell out his vision for sealing the border, enforcing the law, and "creating a rational system for workers to come into our country and to do jobs Americans won't do." Bush plans to visit the U.S.-Mexican border this week, and will dispatch his Cabinet to help sell the immigration plan.
The Senate plans to return to the contentious issue this week now that Republicans and Democrats have a deal to plow through controversial amendments. But the House and Senate are far apart on whether to put illegals on a path to citizenship.
Tamburri said Bush would call for "better equipment, increased funding, and advanced technology" to secure the border.
She didn't confirm press reports that Bush wants to expand deployments of National Guard Troops to step up border enforcement. Some Guard troops are already deployed in Arizona and New Mexico, but Bush is considering a big increase.
White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said that enforcement was the Border Patrol's job - but then asked whether they needed help from the Guard on an "interim basis."
"This is not about militarizing the border," he said. The president is looking to do everything he can to secure the border. It's what the American people want."

Mr President....which part of *NO* don't you understand?
Where did this idea come from, that we must round them up all at once? 11 million?! Do you know how many buses that will take?! blah blah blah...
We CAN and SHOULD deport every single illegal we stumble on, even if it takes years.
You just go from thread to thread spouting you hate don't you?
Might be more constructive if you could come up with several alternatives to the problem.
If we can fight the war on terror, we can boot 11 million out.
It's all about the votes and nothing else with them.
Will we deport any illegal alien after a date certain, when we do not even know when the aliens who are here have arrived in the first place?
Sounds like Tony Snow either didn't tell him how we feel... or he got blown-off after telling him. A re-wrapping of the same sh-t sandwich ain't 'gonna fly.
Careful what you wish for.
No it's not. Two thoughts, here.
All that is required is the will. If he is saying that we don't have the means, then he is not much use as a leader.
If he means that he can't figure out how to do it, he should find someone who can. And so should we, his employers.
I don't think he yet understands the importance of the issue and the depth of anger among American citizens. By finding a solution acceptable to the American taxpayer-citizen, he may be avoiding a civil war.
Well, if we can't deport them, we can't fight terrorism, can't defend our border, can't balance the budget, can't veto a spending bill, can't win in Iraq, can't have a marriage amendment to the Constitution.............
Makes sense to me he should resign and let someone actually lead our nation.
I don't know if there is one out there for it.

Count me as one.
However, even more important to me is going to be...what is will he and Congress do to prevent more illegals from coming in here? And what is going to be done to beef up INS staff and capabilities to for example, detect and deport those who are here on expired visas? From what I understand, the 9-11 hijackers were here on expired visas. It's not just a matter of illegals coming over from Mexico. The fact of the matter is that our entire immigration system is in the dumpster. It is completely ineffective. But I doubt the President or anyone else in government is going to have the balls to actually do what has to be done.
They walked in, walk them out.
Carrot and stick, you know? The stick is border enforcement, the carrot could be the possibility of legal status, but only after first returning home, to make it fair to law abiding people who would also like to migrate.
I don't see anything wrong with increased legal immigration so long as the people coming here are willing to work and take care of themselves. It's only when they break the law, or want to spend my money that I have a problem with them.
Where can I get one of those bumper stickers - The kind that has a "W", with the international red circle and slash thru it?
Tonight, he either reaffirms his proposal of January, 2004, or he caves to the Senate and endangers the Republican Party.
Agreed.
FINE (IMPRISON repeat offenders) EMPLOYERS
BUILD A WALL
GRANT GUEST WORKERS after THE ABOVE TWO
NO CITIZENSHIP - NO VOTING - TO AUTO CITIZENSHIP TO BABIES BORN HERE.
These steps would take care of the problem.
