Bush set for immigration speech

BUSH SET FOR IMMIGRATION SPEECH

WHITE HOUSE President Bush is getting set for a prime-time speech on
immigration tomorrow night.

Aides note the 8 p-m, Eastern Time, speech will be the president's first from the Oval Office that does not involve Iraq and the war on terrorism. And they say that reflects Bush's
"passion" on immigration.

He's speaking as the Senate is poised to clear a compromise measure including his idea for a guest worker program. However, a rival House bill is limited to a border crackdown, and meshing the two won't be easy.

Stand Up For America !

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Border troops would be temporary, US tells Mexico

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush assured Mexican President Vicente Fox on Sunday he did not intend to militarize their countries' mutual border, but was considering sending National Guard troops there to temporarily support border control efforts.

"The president made clear that the United States considers Mexico a friend and that what is being considered is not militarization of the border, but support of border patrol capabilities on a temporary basis by National Guard personnel," White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri said, describing a telephone conversation between Bush and his Mexican counterpart.

Fox "reached out" to Bush on Sunday to relay his concerns about the plan that is under consideration, Tamburri said.

Scarier still.......

According to Jim Gilchrist today, 12 million is a lie. He stated there are more like 30 million and I have found on 'latino' websites the number at 40 million.

It's my understanding for each illegal legalized, 4 or more ADDITIONAL family members are also granted legalization.

At Jim's figure, the total will be 120 million.

"KERRY: The borders are more leaking today than they were before 9/11. We haven't done what we need to do to toughen up our borders, and I will. We need a guest-worker program, but if it's all we have, it's not going to solve the problem. We need to crack down on illegal hiring. It's against the law in the US to hire people illegally, and we ought to be enforcing that law properly. We need an earned-legalization program for people who have been here for a long time, stayed out of trouble, got a job, paid their taxes, and their kids are American. We got to start moving them toward full citizenship, out of the shadows."

Interesting. I don't see much difference in what Kerry was proposing vs. what Bush is planning? It seems the only difference is that Kerry, at least in that quote, never denied his plan was 'amnesty'. Bush goes out of his way to deny that his is amnesty.

Yes it is. And another way to look at it, and to be a little conservative, estimate the number of illegals is somewhere in the middle, maybe around 20 million, that would be 20% of the entire population of Mexico!!

At the very least according to gov. estimates of 12 million, that still is almost 12% of the population of Mexico.. which doesn't include the number family members that would also be made legal. Astounding!!

Fox is dumping Mexico's burden in our lap!! And our sellout pols are allowing it, some even encouraging it!

Cannon Votes for Immigration Reform Bill

Last year Cannon was being trashed for being pro-illegal alien.

Then he votes for and supports 4437.

Interesting.

FOX just broke in with news. The release of what the President will speak about has been handed out.

He will tell America that he will be putting THOUSANDS of Nat'l Guard on the border.

The purpose is to SUPPORT the Minute Men NOT REPLACE THE BORDER PATROL.

Bush called Mr. Vince Fox to ASSURE HIM we would NOT MILITARIZE the border !

The end of the breaking news was a statement: "Only Governor's of the states have the authority to deploy the National Guard." end

This is all that was in the report at 7:35 p.m. central

ON THE BORDERS

OCTOBER 1, 1996

TRANSCRIPT

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the shadow of the kickoff to the welfare experiment were significant changes in another area of social policy: immigration. Charlayne Hunter-Gault talks to two experts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULT: Yesterday Congress passed and President Clinton signed an immigration bill aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. Among other key measures, the bill would double the size of the Border Patrol over the next five years and stiffen penalties for alien smuggling and document fraud, establish pilot programs so that employers can voluntarily check the legal status of prospective workers, increase the income level required for sponsors of immigrants to a minimum of 125 percent of the poverty level, place a one-year time limit on those applying for political asylum, and make it easier to remove people seeking asylum with false documents or no documents. For reaction to the new law, we're joined by the executive directors of two groups on different sides of the immigration issue. Frank Sharry heads the National Immigration Forum, an immigrant advocacy group. Mark Krikorian heads the Center for Immigration Studies, a group that favored cuts in immigration. Gentlemen, thank you for joining us. Give me your reaction, Mr. Sharry, in general to the immigration bill.

FRANK SHARRY, National Immigration Forum: In general, the bill contains many sensible measures to try to deal with illegal immigration, and it focuses those efforts at our borders and at the workplace. And we can disagree over whether they're going too far or not going far enough, but I think what we're seeing is that there is now a consensus in the country illegal immigration as distinct from legal immigration is a problem. The federal government has primary responsibility to do a better job, and it's focusing in the border in the workplace as opposed to the school yard that was a measure that would have forced kids out of school who are here illegally; that was rejected. So I think while we have problems with the bill, and there are some measures that we object to, overall I think it focuses on the right problem and does it in a fairly modest way.

CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULT: Focuses on the right problem?

MARK KRIKORIAN, Center for Immigration Studies: Well, I don't think so. My concern, Charlayne, is that this bill, unlike the original versions introduced by Sen. Simpson and Congressman Smith, which had serious measures in them intended to deal with illegal immigration, has been eviscerated, and what we have left is really a token bill that has some baby steps toward immigration control but doesn't really deal with the important issues that need to be grappled with if illegal immigration is ever going to be brought under control.
