OTOH, they did confirm on the same program that filtered, used cooling oil can be used directly (without having to refine/distill in a reactor) in a diesel car - looks like an older Merz. 300 Diesel was used. I wonder if that's REALLY true
Yes it is really true. I have a friend with a Dodge pickup that has a cummings diesel that runs on used cooking oil. You have to start it with diesel. When his truck warms up he switches to the cooking oil then switches back when he shuts it down.

Ah, but the oil companies, auto companies or govt would buy up the technology faster that a person can say "snap". Do you honestly believe that? Any Auto company or oil company would gladly sell products if such technology existed. They are in business to make money, and sell such a vehicle, or licensing the design, would make a lot of money.

"Mythbusters tried it last week on their show, and busted it flat. You simply cant produce enough hydrogen on board a car, to power the car. Its easy to produce hydrogen, in miniscule amounts, but enough to power a car? Nope.
The video seems to say otherwise"
That car is still limited by the battery it holds. It would be far simpler to just use the battery to power an electric motor to move the car. There is no reason to need a middle man fuel when electric motors are very efficient and have no risk of exploding like a tank of Hydrogen does.
I'd wager 100 bucks that hydrogen powered cars will never be used on a massive scale.

"I wonder if that's REALLY true. "
Going to work one morning I began to smell intense french fries. Then I noticed a sticker in the window of the Merc 300D in front of me claiming it ran on cooking oil. I absolutely believe it. And it stinks to high heaven! If more cars ran on that stuff I could not leave the house without gagging. It was that bad!

WOW. Now imagine if the oil was used to fry fish instead of Taters...... BLARGE!

Unless you've got a really long hose.

As others have pointed out it does work. The only downside, well, other than your exhaust smelling like Taco Bell, is that if you live in a cold winter climate you'll probably have to switch back to diesel during winter as it's apparently a bear to start on cooking oil in cold weather.
Plus once this catches on used cooking oil won't be free and it might end up being the same price as diesel.

You have to run electricty to convert water to hydrogen...
so is it cost effective running the electricty?

But what if a car battery were enough to sustain the reaction? Would that make it more attractive?
I don't know.

I don't know where their can be a hydrogen generator big enough to power a car with enough water to generate... It is no good.
If the generator is at home, and if the hydrogen can be compressed to easily carry... but I don't think so.
Better off exploding a neutron into Uranium 235.

I'm just curious, because, right now, we work with a hydrogen generator, (about the size of two desktop CPUs), that can produce 600 cc/min. Of course, it runs off of 120V.
I don't know enough about the whole subject, but that's why I come to FreeRepublic.com.
To: HoosierHawk
I guess the question is.. How much electricity can 600cc of hydrogen produce?

But can an auto be run on hydrogen at 600 cc/min?
And the alternator restore the battery?
To: HEY4QDEMS
Sure they are...what are you saying? They are probably in the testbed stage. You can't test the idea without putting (building) a Hummer with HHO technology for testing. Of coarse they're not in the production stage yet........

Luckilly, I really don't have to worry about cold weather - Tampa. However, The constant smell of either french-fries or fried fish is not really appealing. Although this smell aversion could change should diesel get REALLY expensive.

It's amazing to me that so many Americans have so little education/knowledge that they need to be convinced by a TV show like this before they realize that a scam like this is bullshiite.
