>>And just how long can the over stretched National Guard provide enough troops to cover the long Border with Mexico?
My Nephew in the Texas NG has been on active duty 2 out of the last 3 years and is currently deploying to Iraq.
They should be deploying to the Rio Grande instead of the Tigris or Euphorates.
These guys cannot guard both the Iraq and U.S. borders. They have civilian jobs and families to support and mortgages, etc. to pay and cannot stay deployed indefinitely. If this crap keeps up it's going to be hello to the draft or one Helluva big pay raise to the NG.<<

We have 1.8 million active duty - we ought to be able to maintain 10% of that force in Iraq indefinitely and still guard our borders.

I did not favor invading Iraq in the way that we did at the time we did - but we are there and we don't need to minimize the importance of fulfilling our obligations there in order to justify secure our borders - we can do both in a rational fashion.

"I'll Never Vote Republican again" ping!

They will simply change their mantra to "So now these Republicans expect me to EXPRESS my deeply-held views on immigration? Toss 'em out in November until they learn mind reading!"

The President had these same views since before he was elected President, and this didn't become an issue until a month or two ago, but of course everyone here claims he's been been posting on this issue 24/7 since November 2000.

We finally express these views, and within weeks the President is taking the very action people here have been requesting.

Their response will now shift to "Troops aren't enough. We need a wall." When that is built the response will shift to "Why isn't there a satellite specifically designed to watch the border?" When that is done, someone will start a petition to have Bush personally guard the border, and if he refuses he will be labelled a RINO--oh, wait they're already doing that one...

Take the captured illegals, and sentence THEM to build the fence!...........

So we don't want them working at 7-11's and cleaning houses, but we want them building our newest #1 security project?

Yes, your point being...

My point being, if you really can't figure out why so many got so angry so fast, you really don't need to be offering opinions. If you can figure it out, all the "studied ignorance" in the world isn't going to make you look anything but duplicitious.

Walls aren't enough. We need the Trans-Dimensional Neutrino Dispersement Barrier. NOW.

I didn't think I would ever live to see the day when Americans wanted to cower behind a wall.

Me neither. Guarding a border isn't the same thing, and I think the Guard can handle the job just fine. The bleating of "We need a wall!" is strangely, how do I put this, Soviet-sounding, to me.

But don't you worry, once we get the Proton Death Particle Accelerators set up in the desert, all will be calm on the border. Then these same "conservatives" can get back to "sending a message" because of Dubai and Meiers.

The object of a border wall is not to make ~real~ Americans cower behind a wall. It is to make some other poor son-of-bitch cower behind the wall over in ~his~ country!

Only the republicans that have always voted for, campaigned for and supported President Bush--the ones now calling him Jorge-(sarc).

We cannot go too fast with the deportation effort.

I do agree with you there. In fact, I think that mass deportations would be a real mistake as it would it give the illegals a real sympathetic halo.

I feel the best way is a two pronged approach. Cut off the flow by building a way and at the same time, cut off the demand by cracking down on employers of illegals.

The crackdowns on employers must include criminal penalties and not just simple fines for it ever to be effective.

Building walls to keep people out have the very real possibility of keeping people in.

"Would that be the Mexican border, the Canadian border, the
Kentucky/Virginia border, what?"

Maybe the Syrian-Iraqi border...
(Yes, a columnist based a column on the dis-connect of the USA controlling
that border better than the USA-Mexico border)

I have heard talk about putting a stop to Western Union (and others) money transfers into Mexico. That would stop the money flow into Mexico and give less incentive for one to work in the United States.

Good post. The money sent to Mexico is a boon to their economy and the main reason the Mexican government will do nothing to stem the tide. By putting restrictions on money transfers, the Mexican government will feel the pinch, and could be used as a barganing tool with the Mexicanos..

Guarded by a Minotaur...

Seriously, I am encouraged by this. Also the threat of the military guarding the US should send the Dems into apoplexy, distracting them from blocking Hayden from going to the CIA..

Cut off the flow by building a way and at the same time, cut off the demand by cracking down on employers of illegals.

A great virtue of a wall, IMO, is not that it would prevent every single illegal from passing (although that would be nice). It is that it would make it much more expensive and inconvenient to live a two-state life, hopping back and forth as if there were no border.

Certainly many of the illegals already here will never be sent back. That being the case, I'd prefer that those who are going to stay recognize that this now is their home rather than just a place that they sneak in and out of to exploit.
