I also have a collection of American phone numbers, it's called a phone book.

Telephone number databasing has been around for years, but no one got too worried about Radio Shack, Sears, AT&T, etc. from gathering all your information. But Heaven forbid if National Security requires gathering calling patterns. Especially if a Republican is in office.

USless Today stirring the pot with old news in order to rejuvinate a non-issue to most Americans, except Ted Kennedy and the drive-by media.

Why doesn't W use the 'bully pulpit', go on TV and explain this situation to America?

He's missed scores of opportunities to do so over the past 6 years, giving the OTM (Old Tired Media) scum, an uninterrupted stream of lies and BS. Ditto the lib-dem filth and RINO traitors in congress, who've betrayed him since day one.

ABC did their part for the DNC this morning.

The person being interviewed had to repeatedly tell ABC that no conversations were being listened to.

Until a couple of weeks ago you could buy this sort of data from cell phone records on-line.

Supposedly, they're not listening to the conversations but I wouldn't know how they'd find out if the calls were terror related, but whatever. They'd be terribly bored listening in on mine.

Hello? ---- click, @#^$# telemarketer

Hello? No, this isn't the bowling alley. No, I'm sure. You have the wrong number.

Hello? Oh, yeah, sure, this is the bowling alley. Who? No, I think she left outta here an hour ago with a truck load of guys.

Hello? No, he's grounded and can't come to the phone.

Hello? No, she's grounded and can't come to the phone.

Hello? No, Mr. M. is busy but lemme guess what you're going to say - you're too sick to come to work.

Hello? Yes. No. Yes. No. Uh huh. Bye, mother.

Ho hum, slow news day?

In their continual effort to undermine Bush and the War on Terror, we now have the latest "leak" of programs designed to seek out and neutralize our enemies here at home.

Dims really want power back bad to actually try to make us lose another war.

What about analyzing TCP/IP traffic clusters between computer nodes without looking at the contents of the packets? Would that be analogous to analyzing phone number traffic without listening to the calls? Do you all think the government is analyzing internet traffic? Do you have a problem with that?

I just happen to have personal knowledge of a "secret" program in which government operatives have access to records of everyone's personal phone numbers, home and business, along with addresses and business contacts that might be involved with those private citizens.

It's called the YELLOW PAGES, you freaking idiot Democrats.

Really, these numbnut liberal Democrats think its a crime for someone to check a list of phone numbers to see if someone in America is talking to terrorist networks overseas.

What is it about the 4th Amendment protection from "unreasonable search" language that people don't understand? Unreasonable does not mean "ANY." We're not insulated from any and/or all searches, some are reasonable. Apparently it's okay for a robot to take your picture on your way home from your girlfriend's house if you happen to run a red light. On top of that they can send the picture to your wife with a bill for $100 which the city splits with Grumman. LOL

No names are attached to phone numbers here. There aren't enough NSA or Service members in the world to listen to the content of the billions of daily calls. Hell it would take 3 full time snoopers just to monitor my niece's daily cellphone activity. Get a grip people, take a pill. Paranoia is not good for your blood pressure. (:^*)

I've been talking in code for years. They listen to my calls and just scratch their heads.

But it has raised enormous privacy concerns in the minds of many

As I'm sure it did 15 years ago or 25 years ago or 50 years ago or whenever this program was initiated.

Traffic Analysis is offensive apparently only during Republican administrations.

Let's see - since 9/11 the NSA has been monitoring phone conversations and since 9/11 there have been no further attacks within the US. Could there be a correlation there?

Why don't they simply require warning labels on all phones. Something like "If you use this phone to plan a nuclear or other terrorist attack on America we reserve the right to use your phone records against you in court" ought to make it "fair".
