Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Posted on 05/10/2006 7:15:13 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Ok hot shot how about an opinion of Simcox from one of his compatriots. This guy sure as hell isn't from the SPLC.

The blinders are on YOU, my friend. The Dems want victory in November, and they are using this issue and the emotion of it, both the media, and the trolls here........to split us apart.

Yeah, right.

I probably know more FReepers on a face-to-face, personal, basis than 99% of the people here.

They're not "DU trolls". They're down to earth, wonderful, conservative, patriotic Americans.

And they're sick of the ugliness against conservatives that's been coming from the folks you run with here...an ugliness that is finding new lows every day now.

It makes no sense at all, on any level of rational thought.

It really doesn't. Nor do any of the other conspiracy theories.

You get Jorge Bush to change his tune

You are a prime example of the kind of jerk I was referring to.

You don't want to fix the problem. You want to be a smart alec and be mad.

But I hope you understand at some point in time, if we split apart, that it is idiots like you who will be the cause of it.

Grow up.

There are those here who do not agree with our President on the immigration issue and are doing exactly that. They are not calling for impeachment or stomping off in a tirade, yet must bear the attacks of the 'my President right or wrong' crowd. Well, he is my President too and on this issue he is woefully wrong. Those of us who don't throw the baby out with the bath water have been hounding our Republican representatives and making our positions clear. I believe it is and will have an effect and something concrete will ultimately be done. I also believe it would not happen without the conservative base coming down hard on our leaders.
I really resent being called a Bush hater, which I am not (not saying you have said that). I support this President wholeheartedly on many issues, but not on this one.
I see the Minutemen doing something about it and I call that positive activism. Republicans would do well to grab onto this issue and lead with it.

Here's my take. I have lived on the border for years, and for years money has been thrown at the border problems, and promises have been made and broken. I believed President Bush was a man of his word, I took him at his word and defended him on border issue threads for a long time. I lost respect for President Bush because he has broken promises about what he would do to secure the border. I also lost respect for him when he called the Minutemen vigilantes and I lose more respect for him every time he says "jobs Americans won't do" to me that is a slap on every American. There is no such thing as a job Americans won't do. Americans do all sorts of nasty hard work every day. I lose respect for the man every time he panders to Mexico at our expense.

I am now at the point when it comes to border issues and politicians that I will only believe it when I see it. If this border gets secured I will be among the first to know. If it is President Bush that accomplishes it, then he will gain back some of my former respect. That may sound like a hard line, but I am fed up and pretty words on a website just don't cut it for me.

They may start yanking press credentials next?

I'd love to hear Tony say: "Now, Helen. With all due respect (which would mean none), you must remember that you have not been a member of the WH Press Core for some years now. You have been allowed to sit in as a courtesy for all the decades you did serve. (Since Lincoln, wasn't it?) But you continue to abuse this courtesy by using this, not for questions, but for your person diatribes.

At the same time, you are taking a seat and time that should be someone else's.

Please turn in your pass and have a good life. (Although that would be difficult considering that every morning when she gets up and looks in the mirror - there she is.)

*********************

When is Tony going to have his first press briefing? I thought it was going to be last Sat - I hope I haven't missed it.

A wall solves nothing....
Is there someplace in the world that you're using as an example? I'm just trying to figure out how you came to that conclusion...what your benchmark is, so to speak.
...in fact there already are walls along long sections of our borders....
And what of the even longer sections that have no fence whatsoever? Doesn't that render those long fenced sections useless?
Just go around the fenced section...

It's worse now than ever. Shoot, last night they were using slime from the communists at the "Southern Poverty Law Center" to slime Chris Simcox.

Did Simcox have a toy Wyatt-Earp-on-a-horse figure on his person when he was arrested with a gun in a national park, or not?

He's been through two wives, both of whom filed abuse charges against him, plus he was charged with sexually abusing his own daughter. Those are all matters of public record.

It's no surprise that Minutemen members would be cowboys, but it ought to concern you that the armed leader of the group has a troubling pattern of flying off the handle.

You can't slime slime.

TF, I think you just made EV's point for him.

Chris Simcox is slime?

That is why Democrats are so upset over Bush over immigration... Bush is not promising instant citizenship and overt amnesty, provisions that most democrats have demanded.

Of course they do. It is a known fact that DU trolls come on this forum every day. It is a known fact that their goal is to divide and conquer. And it is a known fact that they hate President Bush.

Every bit of logic in the world supports their joining forces with the angry, hate-filled conservatives here to destroy any chance that we can work this through.

To anyone who cares,

I have left the GOP, pending the Governor of Florida and/or the President the United States acting according to their sworn oaths to uphold our constitutions and innocent human life by simply giving Terri Schiavo a drink of water.

I hope and pray fervently that the Governor and/or the President and their political advisors make my decision moot by acting to save this dying American citizen today.

Those who won't act to prevent a murder in progress, when they have the power to do so, deserves no patriotic American's political support ever again.

Feel free to pass this news along to anyone in any way you feel would be appropriate.

The silly poll announcements on the evening news isn't going to change my mind. Only one President in recent history has even considered dealing with the issue, and Reagan's '86 amnesty was a flop since no administration since (till now) would enforce the rules or offer something better.

The only reason it's a hot-bed issue now (the problem existed LONG before 2000) is that the DUmocrats think that it's an issue that will divide the GOP. That's all they are hoping for, so they instruct their mouthpieces in the press to push it. I'll take Bush's plan over anything offered by anyone else, especially a DUmocrat (we can thank FDR for the problems of illegals).

Hannity's "Man on the Street" interviews should be an indication of who's being polled these days (generally, the most vocal are usually the most ill-informed). The 2000 and 2004 elections (exit polling) are an indication of why I don't respect polls, since they usually over sample loons to make a good headline.
