Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Posted on 05/10/2006 7:15:13 PM PDT by Dems_R_Losers

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Let me start out by saying I believe Reagan was/is the greatest President in my g-g-generation, so far (I'm not quite dead yet). His greatest mistake IMHO was the amnesty granted to the illegals of the day.

Since then the problem has increased by an order of magnitude. The tired cliche, "those who cannot remember history . . ." still rings true as we slouch inexorably towards socialism.

Believe the rhetoric if you will; don't fault others for not doing the same . . .

And you can blame most of the problems on the greedy commie unions.

No, in point of fact, we cannot displace responsibility where it does not belong in order to avoid responsibility where it does. FACT: Unions and Management contract together based on bargaining between the two. Whether you like the outcome is immaterial. They agree - both parties - to a contracted wage and benefit acceptable to both sides. I'm unaware of any contract signed in the US with regard to Union wage that ever hinged upon YOU liking the agreement between the parties - save perhaps for one in which you belonged to a Union in question.

Unions exist because prior to their existance, Businessmen in this country treated workers like slaves in many areas. Workers got tired of the abuse and did something about it. Some unions, today, have grown to be as abusive as the Businesses that caused them to come into existence. Union jobs are a minority of labor in this country. And Bad unions are a minority of that minority. Doesn't quite wash.

You can attempt to shift onus with this crap-man argument. (A strawman would stink less and look more pleasing); but, not getting away with it in my presence, thank you. The bottom line is that some people just really don't care what they do in making a profit. They feel put upon by others who insist that a proper ethic be followed.. imagine - actually being expected to act ethically - what a drag... Sound familiar - Can anyone say 'hippie' or 'baby-boomer'. All the crap we hear about how unethical the boomers and hippies were .. and when we look at todays problems, it's the very crap we been decrying. But, suddenly, because it's one's own unethical nature in spotlight, it should get a pass. Not on your life.

what info was in black and white?

On a Mexican government website (link on Drudge on May 10), the name of the ranch, including the owner's name, that served as the HQ of Friends of the Border Patrol (Minuteman clone) last year, known only to a few principals (whom I knew well) and the Border Patrol. New recruits were not taken to the ranch until being screened, and there were few of those. The question remaining, where did the Mexicans get the information?

I think we need a day when at least 1 Million of us go to the border & express the desire to secure it. Then it may take a day in Washington. Then (I doubt that will convince the pols)we need "civil disobedience" ( that's slang for being able to reply here). Only when we disrupt these elites schedules to the gym, dinner, events, etc, will anything begin to change.

Does anyone see why the DUmocrats want the illegals here? It's the same reason that they want the dead, felon, ballot-stuffing, crack for votes, etc. How many states did ballot boxes suddenly appear (after a visit from Jesse Jackson) in 2000 or 2004?

The DUmocrats have already aborted any future they may have once dreamed of, and their numbers are dwindling. Anyone with a brain has left the party and they are about to lose their primary voting blocks. Without the illegal votes or ballot stuffing, the party is doomed!

Please do not confuse yourself as being representative of Americans. Most rational people would recognize that the illegals were marching because of the bill that the House wanted to pass, which is what they were marching in opposition to.

Nice spin.

Number One, I am not a Bush-basher and my comments in FR going back to 2002 can show that. Furthermore, I had to stop listening to Michael Savage because I cannot stand his Bush-bashing. I recognised long ago that his Bush-bashing was solely to attract liberal listeners and NOT as much issue-related. I cant stand listening to Savage because of it. So, your "Bush-bashing" mantra is nothing but a security blanket you need to hold on to because you just cannot argue against common sense and facts. (It's a liberal technique. I know this because I deal with them in other newsgroups such as USNET).

That being said, my point is not what they were marching ABOUT but that they were MARCHING. Period.

Yes, he said that. But the president of the Border Patrol association, Bonner, unequivocally said they did, on O'Reillys radio show I believe

Peach,

There certainly is a lot more work to be done, they've barely made a dent yet but some aren't satisfied with any progress. They seem to think a 2,000 ft wall can be built overnight, regardless of the length and terrain, rattlesnakes. tarantulas, scorpions etc., etc., and that 12 million illegal aliens can be rounded up like cattle and transported back over the border with the click of a finger.

Either an insane asylum has been given the link to this forum or these idiots still believe in the tooth fairy.

I for one am very tired and disgusted the way they disrespect the position and the man who was elected POTUS. It makes me wonder the way some of them post if they respect themselves or even know the meaning of respect.

This I suppose is what 8 years of Clinton and his loose morals in the WH has taught them. They no longer recognize a gentleman when they see one.

Nasty remarks tend to harden opinions and don't really promote an exchange of ideas.

Indeed ... we talk to each other on here like we never would if we were sitting down to a cup of coffee together.

Wow. With the GOP we MIGHT get six more years before all the illegals become registered Dems. I don't see any difference.

The President proposed a guest worker bill before the 2004 Elections. True or false?

TRUE

He also promised school vouchers also!

My problem is NOT with GW...It's with the congress! Bush is a good man...Congress, on the other hand has let me down!

No it's not. The Dems are not for sealing the border. Many repubs are.

There are NO Repubs talking about giving automatic votes to illegals. (Bill clinton fast tracked a whole lot of illegals so they would vote for algor).

Dems want drivers' licences for illegals, education benefits and complete healthcare.

It is a Dem governor in Arizona who vetoed stronger measures.

They are not the same. Not even close.

You can argue that the Repubs aren't strong enough (most of us agree with that), but you cannot accurately say that there is no difference.
