I thought employers were already required to check SSNs.

employer sanctions (that are actually enforced) is the way to go - take away job prospects, and alot of illegals will deport themselves.

the problem is going to be - this system would need to be in place for 2-3 years (perhaps more given the legal challenges from the left), not accompanied by amnesty, to get the glitches out and get the businesses squared up with the law. only after a 2-3 year period, would any type of guest worker program be considered.

Are they going to protect those whose SSN's are used by illegals searching for work.

There are a lot of people who are investigated for tax fraud because of unclaimed income. They find out that an illegal had their SSN.

What to do with people who hire illegal immigrants has been one of the stumbling points in putting together a broad immigration bill that tightens borders

That would be "people" such as Cargill Meat Packing, Purdue, Tyson, and Swift, all of which shut down all or most of their regional plants on May Day.

Employers would have to check Social Security numbers and the immigration status of all new hires under a tentative Senate agreement on toughening sanctions against people who provide jobs to illegal immigrants.

Why would AP have to put up a story about a "tentative Senate agreement"? The Senate won't be taking this up again until next week. This is old news.

Infants and Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts were among people barred from boarding a plane because names identical to their own were on a government list of suspected terrorists.

Well, the infants got on there by mistake, but old Teddy is a terrorist supporter.

Their plan would give employers 18 months to start using the verification system once it is financed.

Gives the pols a chance to appear tough on illegals but with multiple "outs" when it comes to future enforcements. Just as the '86 amnesty program did.

This sounds like a good first step. As a legal immigrant, I can relate to the employment verification. Most white collar-type professionals here on work visas have to gen SSN's in order to work. I was robbed last year and had my SS card stolen. Because I'm on a work visa, the Social Security Administration had to copies of ALL of my visa documents to Homeland Security for verification. It took about 3 months for my replacement card to arrive in the mail.

My only issue with the manadatory SSN checks is this. Does the system only check to see if the name and number match? If so, then the system won't work well. Identity theft will be rampant like it is already. There are cases of hundreds of illegals using the same matching SSN and name. Like the story in Utah recently where several 3 and 4 year old children allegedly had dozens of full time jobs because illegals got a hold of their names and SSN's. THere is nothing in the system to check the age of the person and that the person working really is the the person in the Social Security records.

Once again the Feds throw the burden of their failures on to the back of business owners. If they closed the borders and rounded up the illegals this wouldn't be a problem.

If this is enforced it will also create a big boom in identity theft. Be prepared to find out that you are picking produce somewhere in addition to your current job and that you failed to pay some utilities and rent.

Throw them in jail (not the country club type either). By "them", I mean the company owners/executives, as well as the managers or whoever that hired them.

It would cause the jobs for illegals to start going away real fast, which would do a lot to curb illegal immigration.

Even if its enforced, it won't do much good with the BOARDERS OPEN!

Please excuse the yelling.

"Employers would have to check Social Security numbers"

Good. Enforce the law ALREADY in place: $250,000 fine for fraudulent use of a SS number.

Doesn't a red flag go up at the IRS when (read: IF) five tax returns come in under the same SSN?

"The employer sanctions were negotiated separately from other parts of the broader bill after some senators raised concerns about privacy of tax information, liability of employers and worker protections."

IOW, you CANNOT allow amnesty for the illegal alien without providing it for his/her felon employer.

"What's going to happen when you have individuals legally allowed to work in the United States, but they can't confirm it?" asked Angelo Amador, director of immigration policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

I wonder how that works ? The dog ate my homework ?

A tiger with no teeth or claws is just a pretty pussy cat..
Who is to enforce this "law"?..

This law with teeth could solve or attempt to solve the immigration worries.. or part of it.. Which means IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.. Illegal immigration is done/allowed ON PURPOSE by George Bush.. Bush would NEVER sign this law if it had a prayer of being prosecuted.. If no teeth THEN he might sign it.. I say might..

My mailbox is being flooded with mail concerning gas prices and illegal immigrants. To boycott oil companies or not; to provide amnesty to illegal immigrants or not, etc.

Since I have become jaded to the various solutions proposed by the Republicans, Democrats, Sierra Club, ACLU, etc. I have elected to solve the problems as they affect me. It solves both my gas and illegal immigrant problems.

I have hired illegal immigrants to push my car. They're plentiful and cheaper than buying gas.

I guess this means my plan won't work then huh?

I have a better idea; fine each Senator $20,000 for each illegal found within the US border - let's put some teeth into the law where it belongs!
