This sounds like a good first step. As a legal immigrant, I can relate to the employment verification. Most white collar-type professionals here on work visas have to gen SSN's in order to work. I was robbed last year and had my SS card stolen. Because I'm on a work visa, the Social Security Administration had to copies of ALL of my visa documents to Homeland Security for verification. It took about 3 months for my replacement card to arrive in the mail.

My only issue with the manadatory SSN checks is this. Does the system only check to see if the name and number match? If so, then the system won't work well. Identity theft will be rampant like it is already. There are cases of hundreds of illegals using the same matching SSN and name. Like the story in Utah recently where several 3 and 4 year old children allegedly had dozens of full time jobs because illegals got a hold of their names and SSN's. THere is nothing in the system to check the age of the person and that the person working really is the the person in the Social Security records.

We had a wreck near here in which an hispanic man died. In order to contact the next of kin, they used his name and social security number. They got over 20 hits using the same name and number.
