While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are. According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.
"It's not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be," Mario Martinez said Monday.
"This ... simply makes two basic statements -- that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person."
Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.
"Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.
"They just basically endangered the lives of American people."

Again, not true for all illegal aliens - there was a surge in April this year for tax returns being filed by illegal aliens using Individual Taxpayer ID numbers - elementary school students (legal or not) do not need Social Security numbers either.

Personal observations aside, you see xenophobia because you want to see it. Xenophobia, meaning a "dislike of that which is different," is hardly what the majority of folks who want our borders secured and the flood of illegal aliens stemmed have a problem with.
FYI I am plenty old enough to remember the concerns about taking in Vietnamese refugees as well as remember how quickly those concerns were laid to rest by the very veterans who fought there. My memory is that they led the way, they had the compassion and wisdom to know these were victims in every sense and they are the ones who had the courage to speak up for them. But I'm old, my memory may not be so hot.

Turned off that the president, who is protecting the country and has suggested a solution that at least begins to address the problem, which is more than anyone else has ever done in my lifetime, including Reagan, is condemned at every turn.

This is drama queen stuff. I appreciate the efforts of the Minutemen, but let's not act as if they're the only thing standing between freedom and slavery.
If they continue to push this phony story tomorrow, it will be clear what their motivations are.
The real scandal would be that State has known about this all along and has done nothing.
