If I had told you on 9/11/2001 that we'd go four and half years and counting without another terrorist attack on US soil, would you have believed me?
If I had told you that US-led forces would secure Afghanistan in just a few months...something the Soviets couldn't accomplish in ten years...would you have thought I was crazy?
If I had told you that Saddam was gone, that Khadaffy had renounced terrorism, and that Iraq was on the verge of becoming the second democracy in the Middle East, would have thought I was on medication?
Sometimes in our disappointment of this administration, we often forget some of the positives. The economy is strong. More Americans are homeowners. With tax cuts, we're spending less time working for Uncle Sam.
And if you take those benefits for granted, just imagine how much different things would be under a President Al Gore.
So if the president's stance on immigration and spending upset you - and they do upset me - what are you going to do about it? Stay at home? Nothing could be worse for conservativism. Your non-support will usher in more immigrants, higher taxes, and weaker national security.
If the GOP loses Congress, George W. Bush will be removed from office. Nothing would embolden terrorists more. How can we be counted on to wage an effective war when we can't even decide who our enemy is?
George W. Bush isn't the enemy. But that's exactly the message conservatives will send to the world if they stay at home this November.
If you're upset with W. on immigration - write him, write a Republican Congressman, let him know how you feel. It was conservatives who got Bush to change his mind on Harriet Meirs.
I promise you, a Democratic Congress won't be nearly as responsive to your needs.
Hey, cool. I made that list just the other day but for altogether different reasons.
It's so simple and so clear: what angry conservatives want is a border fence.
Just agree to that this year and start building it, while kicking the can of amnesty down the road for a debate next year, and the conservative coalition will be put back together and in good shape for November. Give the border conservatives their fence, and they will come out in droves to make sure the GOP stays in office and it gets built.
It's all the Republicans have to do to lock up the election and avoid the Parade of the Horribles (and they are pretty horrible) if the Democrats win: loss in Iraq, impeachment, proposed tax hikes. A Republican loss would be a disaster. So, it's time to avoid it, by having the party leaders choose not to run the ship aground and just vote to build the damned fence. That's ALL that is required to ensure the win.
Refusal is all that is required to fatally divide the conservatives and guarantee a loss.
Given that it's so simple and so clear.
To prove it, here's a TEST for all of you angry conservatives posting on this thread: answer me Yea or Nay: IF the Congress voted for the fence, but did not vote for amnesty this year, allocated the money, Bush signed the law, and the construction started this year, would you be sure to get out and vote for the GOP this year in order to protect that gain?
It's just like with the Miers nomination: once it was pulled and Alito was offered up instead, the pro-life conservatives who had been at the barricades RUSHED to close ranks around the President and the Party again, as though a collective sigh of THANK GOD was heard all across the right in the country. That would happen again if the GOP would just pass the fence.
Or think of how totally they could screw up this country if they were in power for just two years. And consider that incumbents are re-elected by an over 90 percent rate.
Tell that to these guys...and their families.
Presidents (Democrat and Republican) always endorse incumbents. It's considered bad form to do otherwise.
I'd be there. Fix the damn leak before we all drown.
Stop sounding so worried, Inquest. This is just a forum where ideas are debated. The GOP will be picking up extra seats, as the Faux Conservatives in this forum will be "spending" MASSIVELY to support their own CANDIDATE. The "spending" will help the economy. That's good, ye knew..
So, who do you have in mind?
**You'll are going to be in shock, when it's determined Illegal Immigration is the single issue why we lost our elections**
Okay, you keep telling yourself that. But I'm not a single issue voter.
But WAY too complicated for the "politically savvy" types around here to grasp.
LOL! Spoil sport.
What's pretty damn scary to me is that you people have your heads so far up your asses that you can't see everything President Bush has done for this country. When Hillary is elected in 2008 after two years of Democrat control in Congress, you'll understand what I mean.
Not if those Republicans leave their balls in their medicine cabinet when they leave their homes in the morning.
It's shocking to me how many Freepers consider politics more important than conservative values!
You're playng the same game as the libs. This isn't about power for a party, it's about the security of America, you me, and our children!!!
HELLO!!!
If the GOP ain't gonna get the job done, screw 'em! I'm not here to ensure their career or financial welfare!
I will say this, this is the weakest "in power" Senate I can ever remember, for good or for bad.
Hmmmm I wonder if your going to vote because you love W.
Good, all the more reason to vote third-party, given that there's no risk involved.
Hey I thought the Minutemen had that fence thing covered. How is that going? I have a roll of chicken-wire I could donate.
What I have noticed is that they Rats tend to shoot their ammo now rather than till the campaign season starts officially...
I always do!
Wow! A decoder ring which probably spells out: MAKE SURE TO EAT YOUR TOFU! lol
OK....Ronald Reagan.
