Bonds Likes His Numbers Better Than Babe Ruth

Bonds likes his numbers better than Babe Ruth May 08 10:53 AM US/Eastern.

A boastful Barry Bonds said if he passes Babe Ruth that his place in history would be secure.

Asked if he would consider himself better than Ruth if he vaults ahead of the New York Yankees legend for second place on the all-time home run list, Bonds said: "I don't know yet, but the numbers speak for themselves."

The embattled Bonds moved within one home run of Ruth for the No 2 spot, but it was in a losing cause as San Francisco lost 9-5 to Philadelphia on Sunday.

"*" will follow every entry with his name in it.

It should.

But, Bud Selig is no Kennesaw "Mountain" Landis.

Perhaps in San Francisco he is seen as a possibly flawed person who is being used as the whipping boy for all of baseball.

That's a load of crap. He's the whipping boy for him.

Perhaps at home he can get a break from wearing the Scarlet S that the rest of baseball requires.

The Scarlet letter is all his own.

All I know, is that every thread that so much as mentions Barry Bonds, immediately becomes a cheap imitation of a DU thread.

Because the Bonds sycophants dissemble and twist and deflect and obfuscate.

I believe if Babe Ruth took care of his health and was more disciplined he could have made 800 HRs in his career easily.
One thing ( either you liked him or not ) Babe Ruth had character, and he once left ( or stopped ) a ballgame after a dog was hit by a line drive ball Babe Ruth went out and gave the dog some assistance and took the dog to the vet while the game was still in play.

I am not quitting, nor is that typical of me.

Your comments "Why don't you start juicing like your hero, Bonds?" is the reason I have decided it's not worth it to try to have a discussion on these threads. If you are interested in my thoughts you are welcome to see them on The "Bonds likes his numbers better than Babe Ruth Thread."

Far from quitting, I am leaving the thread so that I don't interfer with the Bonds Bashing that you all apparently want. It's convenient to have someone to blame for all that's wrong in baseball, if not the world. Far be it from me to deprive you of that.

Quote: "I believe that he is referring to the fact that pool of great pitchers was limited by segregation."

Then again, Ruth did not play in the expansion era where the pitching has been greatly watered down.

Barry's place in history may be secure for any number of reasons; but not for being better than the Babe. I would have to see a few more pitching wins in Bond's stats to rank him above Mr. Ruth, the steals not withstanding.

Don't forget - the baseballs are a lot more "juiced" today too!

"Well, if a guy like Josh Gibson had been allowed to play, the Babe might not have even retired the home run king."

This is delusional. MULITPLE Josh Gibsons wouldn't have threatened Ruth as the HR king

"Records from the segregation era are different, because the best competition wasn't allowed."

This point cuts BOTH ways. The VAST majority of those Black League players wouldn't have stood a chance in the majors. A truly talented player in the Negro leagues would have looked like God in comparison to the guys around him.

The numbers in the Majors would be different if a Blacks had had a shot but SLIGHTLY . And that is purely a statistical truth.

I feel the same way toward Bonds. Twelve years ago I saw him play at Candlestick and was awed by his easy athleticism. For years he was a minor god to me. He did not need juice to set records!

Now, I despise him for what he did to the Barry Bonds I knew.

I'm not certain if steroids (and I'm talking about the way players used to juice, anabolic) will help with vision. But I'm pretty certain HGH can positively affect vision, reaction time, ability to heal and so on (especially as we get older) and it sounds like Bonds was using everything available.

Either way, I agree it may well especially help an aging player hit a ball more consistently.

Me too. I'm giving all my income to the US Government to be redistributed through welfare.

Will they pay me back for the broadcasting job I didn't get because I'm white?

Babe Ruth was not responsible for segragation [sic], but he sure benifited [sic] from it.

Pure speculation.

But don't let that stop you from playing the race card.

True, possibly, but Bonds isn't done yet - why not just get off his back?

Ruth didn't juice, but he did play during the segregation era.

He also played in an era of dead baseballs and dead bats, pitchers who threw at your head if you pissed them off, doubleheaders, long bus and train rides, 154 game seasons, and extremely deep centerfield walls.

I dont think you can compare apples to oranges..

I KNOW you cant compare a man on Steroids to a man who never used them.

Ruth changed the game and is legend... Bonds brought it disgrace... and his numbers will forever be associated with it. Ruth was bigger than life... but life was too big for Bonds.

That's one of the tragedies of the whole Bonds situation. If Bonds hadn't done steroids, he still would have been one of the all time greats. Instead, he will be known as a cheater and a doper.

Bonds sold his soul in order to break some records, which he won't get credit for breaking because most people think he cheated in order to break the records.

I agree completely. Why not have a good clean record of which you may be proud, rather than a suspect career?
