Bonds Likes His Numbers Better Than Babe Ruth

Bonds likes his numbers better than Babe Ruth May 08 10:53 AM US/Eastern.

A boastful Barry Bonds said if he passes Babe Ruth that his place in history would be secure.

Asked if he would consider himself better than Ruth if he vaults ahead of the New York Yankees legend for second place on the all-time home run list, Bonds said: "I don't know yet, but the numbers speak for themselves."

The embattled Bonds moved within one home run of Ruth for the No 2 spot, but it was in a losing cause as San Francisco lost 9-5 to Philadelphia on Sunday.

Who knows, Ruth possibily would have also taken whatever if whatever was available at the time.

I never realized the 'unknown ingredients' in tube steaks were steroids! Maybe that's why, at 59, I have the body of a Greek God. Unfortunately, it's Dionysus.

Well, if a guy like Josh Gibson had been allowed to play, the Babe might not have even retired the home run king.

Right. So when it comes to personal hitting performances, baseball's history segregation only affected personal statistics in relation to what other players from that time might have done, not with regard to a player's own statistics. Ruth probably would have hit about 714 home runs regardless of baseball's color barrier -- though someone else (a black player who wasn't allowed in big-league baseball) might have hit more home runs if he had been allowed to play.

I do, however, find it odd how people like to point out that Ruth's records are somehow illegitimate because he had played in a segregated era, and point to legends about Josh Gibson's home run exploits to make their case. And yet Gibson didn't face the best pitchers of his era, either.

Bonds cheated, and lied about it to a Grand Jury.

Cheats....lies...really good for America's Pastime. As fans, we're not supposed to boo, but we do anyway when it's a lying cheat.

Bonds may very well have used enhancers ...

It's not a "maybe" thing. He did. He's denying he knew what he was taking, but that is a crock. Since he's pretending to be some sort of hero or role model, I hold him to a higher standard than "He never got caught red-handed."

"...Bonds couldn't carry Babe's golf clubs."

"Leave those alone steroid boy, I'll carry them myself!"

Babe had a GREAT golf game as well, check out that swing!

If the stats are available from the Negro League, you add the better pitchers of the Negro League with MLB stats, then let a computer do it's thing.

Regardless, starting pitchers usually went ddep into a game in Ruths day. Not many mid-relievers and closers. the batter saw the same pitcher at least 3 or 4 times, and could gauge the pitches better than facing a new set-up man, then the closer.

Typical. You start losing, so you become a quitter. Why don't you start juicing like your hero, Bonds?

See #83. The poster did NOT make an excellent point. How can you make the case that Ruth's numbers -- in and of themselves, not in comparison to other players of his era -- would have been different in an integrated environment, when there have NEVER been more than a handful of black pitchers in big-league baseball even today (60 years after the color barrier had been broken).

That's sort of like saying that Wayne Gretzky's NHL record of 92 goals in a single season is somehow tainted because there were no Mexican-American players in the NHL back in the 1980s. Well, OK -- that's true . . . but it's not like there are a ton of them in the NHL today, either!

Since MLB has tacitly endorsed the use of steroids by its players, I have absolutely no use for them any more. I don't look at the scores. I don't watch the games on TV. I don't buy tickets. They aren't making any $$ off me at all.

Hope it was worth it for ya. Professional baseball is dead.

>>>Yeah Right. And if my Aunt had a penis she would be my Uncle.

So if we were to ban Latin Americans from MLB, you don't the batting statistics of the remaining players would improve?

Sorry, If Ruth had take 'roids, the record wouldn't have been 744, but 1744.

The difference is that Latin-Americans aren't necessarily much more or less likely to be playing any specific position or positions. There was a time when banning Latin Americans would have had almost no impact at any position except shortstop, but that's obviously changed over the years.

How many championships does Bonds have again? If he can just keep playing until he catched up with Ruth in that category.

I read somewhere years ago that Ruth hit around twice as many home runs per time at bat as any of the modern home run leaders.

Don't know if it is true but may well be as they only played 154 games plus Ruth started as a pitcher. He was a good one too.

Pure speculation. White pitchers couldn't have gotten Josh Gibson out?

Babe Ruth was not responsible for segregation but Barry Bonds was responsible for taking steroids and HGH.

Bonds should shut his mouth...

Bonds, like many of his contemporaries, is apparently ignorant of much of baseball history. I nearly tossed my cookies a few years back when Jeff Kent said in a local (SF) interview that he was not aware of who Rogers Hornsby was. Perhaps, if Barry etc. had been schooled on events such as the following paragraph depicts, they would be a bit more respectful of the game that has made them so wealthy.

He [The Babe] will always be remembered as one of the greatest hitters of all time, but he was an equally adept pitcher. In his first World Series game for Boston in 1916, Babe set a record that still stands today. Ruth took the mound in Game 4 against the National League Champion Brooklyn Robins. He got off to a rocky start in the first inning by giving up a quick run, but settled down to pitch 13 scoreless innings for the 2-1 win. The 14-inning gem stands as the longest complete game in World Series history.

There's one huge difference between Ruth's era and the modern era that doesn't get mentioned at all in these discussions -- the quality of the baseball on any given pitch. Back in Ruth's time, they played with the same baseball as long as the ball was in play, pretty much regardless of how it looked after it had been hit and thrown around the field.

Today, every pitch is thrown using a very clean ball. Balls generally get tossed out of the game after getting hit against a wall or even fouled into the dirt. This might sound inconsequential, but I would think this has had at least as much of an impact on the game of baseball over the years as the advent of night baseball has.

But the overall talent pool drops because people are restricted. Isn't that the argument folks around here make about colleges setting quotas for admissions. Some less dersrving minority is taking the place of a deserving White, thus bringing the total pool down. Back in the days of segregated baseball, owners limiting the pool of available players likely offered pitching jobs to Whites that would have gone to Blacks if a free market were allowed to exist. The overall pitching talent pool was lower under segregation that it would have been under a free market. Hitters were the beneficiary.
