VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - In the latest Vatican broadside against "The Da Vinci Code", a leading cardinal says Christians should respond to the book and film with legal action because both offend Christ and the Church he founded.
Cardinal Francis Arinze, a Nigerian who was considered a candidate for pope last year, made his strong comments in a documentary called "The Da Vinci Code-A Masterful Deception."
Arinze's appeal came some 10 days after another Vatican cardinal called for a boycott of the film. Both cardinals asserted that other religions would never stand for offences against their beliefs and that Christians should get tough.
"Christians must not just sit back and say it is enough for us to forgive and to forget," Arinze said in the documentary made by Rome film maker Mario Biasetti for Rome Reports, a Catholic film agency specializing in religious affairs.
"Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others," Arinze said.
"This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected," he said, without elaborating on what legal means he had in mind.
A transcript of the documentary, due to be screened in Rome later this month just before the release of the film version of the best-selling book at the Cannes Film Festival, was made available to Reuters.
The book, written by Dan Brown, has sold more than 40 million copies.
Read some of Laurence Gardner's book on this - he has access to the Vatican archives and many other ancient libraries and archives - and his books are not fiction:
Look him up - and read his credentials
It may be that the 'fiction' is found from the places that 'doth protest to much"
The Catholic church is getting so worked up over this that I'm starting to wonder if the book is actually on to something. Methinks they doth protest too much.
LOL! No, it's not. It is FICTION. It is a novel. That's all it is. If it throws in historically accurate background to make the story more interesting, it doesn't mean the author is presenting the whole story as "the truth".
Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" is a perfect example of historical fiction. Caesar was murdered in the Senate (historical fact), but it is very unlikely he said "Et tu, Brute?" with his dying breath.
You got that right! Everything else I agree with too.
Because that would mean that Jesus had sex, which any Christian will tell you is dirty and sinful. (/s)
I hope you are also insulating them from history - especially the history of the early church and all the centuries since. Wouldn't want them to think for themselves. Dangerous!
My faith in GOD and JESUS (Not necessarily in churches) has been strengthened immensely by independent research, reading and study.
I am immediately suspicious when someone tells me what to and what NOT to read...as if my mind is inferior and needs to be led by them
Lets all propose legal action against all of the pedophiles in the Catholic Church.
Ok but not everyone "needs" a conspiracy theory. Who cares about them? I think it is a much better idea for the Church to fight fiction with fact, right? It makes more sense to say, "Well... here is where we disagree with Dan Brown and why..."
At this point, I don't fault people for suing to defend their reputation. It may be an unwise move. In this case it's probably pointless. But if it's in their legal right, it's an avenue they're entitled to consider.
Whose reputation are we talking about? The Church? Remember he is calling on the laiety, not the clergy, to sue (if I read the article correct). Why doesn't the Vatican sue directly if that is the case? Besides what good would suing do? Stop the movie? In making such a big deal about this movie it sure "LOOKS" like they want to censor it. If the Church was wise, they would do what I said, just use Vatican Archives to disprove Dan Brown completely.
Otherwise... people will really believe it.
And on this thread.
I can see why the Catholic Church would mobilize resources to educate people about why this movie is bogus.
Yes, indeed... let's not let people think for themselves. This is how the Church has maintained power for centuries.
I know no one in my little Missionary Baptist church is going to go see the movie!
Good idea, that gives them more time to burn books instead.
;o)
yep - when the 'sinful' part if the way is has been used - not the act itself - which is as act of co-creating with God - and act that should be revered as Holy -
Um... I don't know and I don't care. Even if I knew who they were what could I do?
No, we just don't want to watch an openly blasphemous movie and in the process reward those who made it.
Similarly, I doubt many churchgoers would watch portography. :)
This doesn't mean that I think the Catholic Church is going about their task in the most efficient way possible. Calling for boycotts tends to tickle peoples' curiosity, as has been mentioned previously.
Instead, they should perhaps produce a publication which contains a plot synopsis which desciribes the blasphemous material in question as well as scriptural and historical evidince that shows that TDC is a bunch of bunkum.
But I'm not the Pope. Nonetheless, they are doing good work by discouraging church members from seeing the movie.
Boy, I wouldn't want to be caught watching that! ;o)
How is demonstrating that things like "The Priory of Sion" were made up by a French conman not letting "people think for themselves?"
The book and the movie claim that Christ survived the Crucifixtion and was not taken up into heaven. This would make Christ a liar, and is thus a direct assault on what we belive. Do we not have a right to point out that we frown on such things?
What exactly do you mean by "let's not let people think for themselves?" That's just a bunch of emotional rhetoric that doesn't actually mean anything in the context of this disucssion.
And that book burning bit was cute, too. Where did that come from? We're not talking about banning books. We're challenging the contents of a goofy movie. If that makes us "Just like Hitler," I guess you can put us in the same box as everyone else who has ever criticized the factual content of any piece of literature or performance art ever made.
(Warning - Cheap shot ahead)
I'm sure that includes your mom. :)
Lol, don't critisize my spellering! :P
According to his web site:
Laurence Gardner is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and a Professional Member of the Institute of Nanotechnology. Distinguished as the Chevalier de St. Germain, he is a constitutional historian, a Knight Templar of St Anthony, and is Presidential Attaché to the European Council of Princes.
Both a Knight Templar and a member of the Institute of Nanotechnology. This seems a rather unusual set of credentials.
Speculations on the history of a religion are fine, but they're just speculations - however, they should be countered when they are falsely promoted by the author, the movie industry and the press as being the truth, albeit the "hidden truth."
Read this and the blasphemous novel that presents itself as truth will be debunked...conspiracy by conspiracy.
