A federal jury decided Wednesday al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui deserves life in prison for his role in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, on Sept. 11, 2001.
On the seventh day of deliberation, the jury of nine men and three women informed Judge Leonie Brinkema that it had reached a decision. The verdict was announced at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Moussaoui, a 37-year-old Frenchman of Moroccan descent, is the only person charged in this country in connection with the suicide jetliner hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field.
The verdict came after four years of legal maneuvering and a six-week trial that put jurors on an emotional roller coaster.
The panel of northern Virginia residents was shown gruesome never- before-released images of the carnage that day, heard the first public playing of the cockpit recorder from United Flight 93 whose passengers tried to retake the jet over Pennsylvania, and watched and listened as dozens of victims and relatives described the horrors and losses they had endured.
The nine men and three women deliberated about 40 hours. They had found Moussaoui eligible for execution after more than 16 hours of deliberations in late March and early April.
Although he was in jail on immigration violations on Sept. 11, the jury ruled that lies he told federal agents the month before the attacks kept the government from identifying and stopping some of the hijackers.
That is why the Israelis NEVER negotiate with hostage takers. Set that precedent and you encourage kidnapping.
Fellow Americans, if we can't rescue you you are already dead; so do whatever you can to take a few with you.
I respect the legal system - I don't respect those who abuse it, like this jury.
Unfortunately, I think you will win that bet.
Maybe they could bunk him with Jeffrey Dahmer's old prison roommate. The one that beat him to death with an iron bar.
Exactly, How many head are going to be cut off and shown on TV because of this jury's decision?
I've had it with all this crap about execution would have made him a martyr, prison mutes his ass.Look how much damage Adolf Hitler,Nelson Mandela, and Sen.McCain caused after they got out of prison.
:)
What's Sirhan Sirhan up to these days? Is he still alive?
This is bad news. Anyone who is kept alive, even in prison, has "rights." He will, if the jihadists want, be able to participate in new plots. We will have to feed him kosher food, let him pray, etc. It is humiliating. There will be stories about him from time to time. Some stupid woman will want to marry him, etc. Yes, these guys want to die, but they want to die while killing others. On balance, executing him would be the right thing to do. These scum already have their "martyrs." And an execution would be a sign of Western seriousness. This "life in prison" nonsense is the exact opposite, as is the fact that the trial, etc., took so long.
The best outcome now would be two things: One, Moussaoui is brutally killed in prison, ASAP. Two, the U.S. de-emphasizes "capture" of terrorists, which for the most part will only lead to Moussaoui-like results, or worse. Instead, it emphasizes the "kill" component of that ambiguous slogan, "capture or kill." "Or" can be a very dangerous word, as we say today with this spineless jury. It would be interesting to know how many of them are Rats.
Give him his 72 virgins.
To a certain extent, this is true no matter what we do.
I felt this was going to happen...it just makes me even more suspicious as to why McVeigh was executed so quickly.
The prosectution presented its case, the defense theirs, and the jury decided. Its how our system works.
"I've had it with all this crap about execution would have made him a martyr, prison mutes his ass.Look how much damage Adolf Hitler,Nelson Mandela, and Sen.McCain caused after they got out of prison."
Good point and AMEN!
I agree, what an embarrassment. Thanks, jurors! NICE message to send to the world. Really great. I'll remember how merciful we are as a country while Abdul-mohammed-jihadi is cutting my head off!!
Well said.
How did the jury abuse it? You can not like the decision, thats fine. In the end though the jury's decision is the only one that matters.
I just hope he gets his little prayer rug and religiously sensitive meals, and that his toilet doesn't face the wrong way. See, we have to show that we are not like the terrorists, tat way they will like us and stop killing our people/
>he'll get a prayer rug, halal meals, a koran etc. etc...anyone wanna bet?<
Tragically, you are probably right. I would prefer that all his meals consisted of pork products, and nothing else, until he starves himself to death!
McVeigh refused his appeals, which gives you an idea just how long this process keeps the bastards alive.
As for this piece of crap, my guess is they can try solitary all they like, but like Dahmer, the gen pop will get to him.
If I was the Warden, his best friends would be maggots.
This hold country is going to pot.It would have taken me one second to sentence him to die.
