Yesterday we'd joked that I might actually have to talk to my son-in-law.

Actually, yesterday renewed my faith in him -- and in the "job" that sometimes falls on fathers.

Backstory: My daughter moved back home for 8 months or so before her wedding in 1993. During that time, she got Lu -- a husky/German Shepherd/who knows(?) mix. (The pictures below are from May 1993.)

Lu got sick Monday night. Because the meds from the Vet weren't helping, the son-in-law was leaving to take Lu to the Vet at the same time I was leaving to come home last night. That visit to the Vet confirmed what they'd feared, and Lu was laid to rest under her favorite tree. (The MBABGDITW#2 is 4 1/2 and it broke my heart when my daughter said the "service" they held for Lu included more explanations about the soul because the MBABGDITW#2 couldn't understand how Lu could be in heaven "when her skin is still here.")

All of this has made me sadder than I would have predicted. But, I am so grateful I was able to time my visit there yesterday. (Yesterday was the first time in over a month that I'd been able to coordinate how I felt with one of my daughter's days off from work.) We'd been concerned all day because once the rain stopped and the winds died down, Lu still wasn't able to venture outside her doghouse and into the sunshine. My daughter had tried to get Lu to eat or drink despite being inside the doghouse and the dog either wouldn't or couldn't. I got to see the son-in-law remove the roof to the doghouse and lovingly place Lu onto the ground -- and see the look of gratitude in that dog's eyes. (Anyone who says that a dog can't smile doesn't know what they're talking about.) Lu was only able to get to her feet for a brief moment,...

HANKY ALERT!!!!!!

Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News
The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have done..........
