Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., a longtime opponent of illegal immigration, says the May 1 Latino worker boycott is "a bust when it comes to changing public opinion in America.
Tancredo, appearing on Fox News Channel, said the waving of Mexican flags, the chanting of "Today We March, Tomorrow We Vote, and the in-your-face flaunting of U.S. immigration law will not win many converts outside of large Latino strongholds.
"When the average American looks out on the streets and sees people demanding rights ... even though the protesters illegally snuck into our country, it doesnt play well in Peoria, Tancredo said. "I dont think its working in favor of the illegals, but I hope they keep it up.
Tancredo said Americans who may have initially been sympathetic to the plight of families who genuinely wish to come to America by legal means will be turned off by the antics of illegal alien protesters.
"I think some of my [congressional] colleagues in New York and California may be influenced by them, but generally speaking, most of the people I talk to say dont give in to them; dont give in to the mobs, Tancredo said.
The congressman said most of the e-mails and phone calls he receives from constituents say he and his fellow congressmen should not "give them anything close to amnesty. Most, he said, have asked Tancredo to persuade the House of Representatives and Senate to stick to the House bill and stricter enforcement of the U.S. borders.
Booyah! Tancredo nails it. More rope! Give them more rope!
I don't know. I have a feeling this will be made into an unofficial annual goof off holiday for Latinos. They'll probably string it out for the whole week--Uno de Mayo to Cinco de Mayo.
I find it abhorrent that they come here illegally to begin with, but when honest American citizens start to point out the illegality of their presence, they have the gall to wave Mexican flags?
Representative Tancredo is a great example of the party values we need to return to. I hope he throws his hat into the ring in 2008.
spinspinspin - everybody spin
Not really. I live in the area of a Cargill plant that shut down today to honor the protest. What is funny is the Mexicans that work there apparently decided to go shopping. I saw several at the local Dollar General and about town. I guess the boycott part didn't filter down to the ranks.
total waste of time
I don't think so. Our causes for border security and deporting criminals are enhanced by efforts like this.
It was useful for people that live outside major metro areas to see the radical influences of the pro-illegal immigration crowd. Hope they continue to protest, keep calling radio programs and show up on TV more!
Every time they speak or demonstrate more letters and phone calls are directed to Washington to do something.
"At the state Capitol in Sacramento, the California Legislature canceled its floor sessions and the two onsite cafeterias remained latched because not enough employees showed up. Yet many large manufacturers, including the Farmer John meatpacking plant in Los Angeles and Gallo Wine's plants in Modesto, Fresno, Sonoma and other cities reported they were near fully staffed."
Forget the nonexistent traffic today, THIS is THE great unforeseen benefit. If they're not in session, they can't screw anything else up!
Backlash? You bet. AMERICANS are going to be BEGGING Illegals to stay home if they can free up the roads, tie up the government, and put illegals out of business with just one stone.
I'm writing in Tancredo in the 08 NH Primary.
It will be fun to see how this affects the elections.
Didn't you mean 2006 and 2008?
If Tom runs in 08 this is really going to get interesting. I just hope it does not put Hillary in the White House. Tom expresses what I feel.
"We demand voting rights and citizenship for illegals. We also insist on unguarded open borders to maintain human rights for all peoples.
You must learn to trust the peaceful people of other lands more. You all need to follow the example of Mohammed to show more tolerance to others!
This day you have a limited menu at Taco Bell, so let this be a lesson that engraves itself into your soul."
Lots of folks in 1992 said the same thing about Perot, and we got Hillary's hubby.
One side line is that the good Congressman has visions of using this issue for a White House run. I wish him the best of the luck but he wont get my vote. He turned me off after his grandstanding comments after the Hurricane.
I don't mean to be a language bore but this one drives me nuts every time I see it, which is way too often. It's FLOUTING the law, not flaunting it.
He's already said that if he does decided to run, he doesn't expect to win. He would just be in for the debate. What did he say after Katrina?
Lol, you learn something new everyday. I never realized that. I have been using that term incorrectly for years.
