Taranto's Best of the Web: Lack of Raves Prompts Rants (On Colbert)

Lack of Raves Prompts Rants
You'll never believe what the Angry Left is angry about now. It seems the biased right-wing media are trying to cover up . . . a comedy routine! Editor & Publisher, the trade magazine for Bush-hating newspapermen, tells the story:

A blistering comedy "tribute" to President Bush by Comedy Central's faux talk-show host Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondent Dinner Saturday night left George and Laura Bush unsmiling at its close. . . .

[E&P's Joe] Strupp, in the crowd during the Colbert routine, had observed that quite a few sitting near him looked a little uncomfortable at times, perhaps feeling the material was a little too biting--or too much speaking "truthiness" (Colbert's made-up word) to power.

Over on the Puffington Host, Peter Daou, who worked on the 2004 John Kerry* campaign, describes the performance in this way:

The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner was televised on C-Span Saturday evening. Featured entertainer Stephen Colbert delivered a biting rebuke of George W. Bush and the lily-livered press corps. He did it to Bush's face, unflinching and unbowed by the audience's muted, humorless response.

He then quotes the enthusiastic reactions at DemocraticUnderground and the Daily Kos and faults the mainstream press for not seeing it the Angry Left's way:

The AP's first stab at it and pieces from Reuters and the Chicago Tribune tell us everything we need to know: Colbert's performance is sidestepped and marginalized while Bush is treated as light-hearted, humble, and funny. Expect nothing less from the cowardly American m

Maybe Colbert should have tried barnyard humor. It worked last year.

Even Cedric did a better job. His best bit last year was Condi and DeLeeza.

What does it say about the "real" spokespeople of the left--journalists, politicians, activists et al.--that the most appealing figures are ones who get to hide behind clown make-up whenever the kitchen gets too hot?

. . . left George and Laura Bush unsmiling at its close. . . .

That's because the Helen Thomas video SUCKED. It's as simple as that. I was stunned that Colbert ended with it.

I watched it. He was not even close to be funny. It was tediously boring. The Bush impersonator was a hoot.

He not only bombed, his attempt at humor was in very bad taste and the audience knew it.

I turned it off after his first bomb about the 14 suvs blocking in the other 14 suvs, and no one in the audience made a sound.

I laugh at anti Bush jokes all the time, funny is funny, and Bush is funny. Colbert was terrible. If I could give him credit for 3 funny jokes, I'd be lying.

When the liberal media and celebs aren't laughing, you know it wasn't funny. It was an attack, it was disrespectful, and it lacked humor.

Here's a better explanation than that offered by the deranged and depraved left:

A leaden, dim-witted attempt at a 'comedy' routine violated the basic premise of the event by turning into a vicious partisan assault rather than the light-hearted teasing that is the norm at this kind of event. The tough, fearless 'comedian' was so unsuccessful in his feeble attempts at comedy that virtually no one laughed.

Rather than explain to a national audience just how bad the leftist raving 'comedian' was, the MSM largely ignored the act (even though it was the featured act).

SO, contrary to what the loony left is saying, AP and other MSM outlets were doing them a FAVOR by trying to screen the public from the knowledge that yet another tradition (though who cares about the stupid WH Press Corps dinner except the MSM?) has been viciously trashed by humorless leftists who are truly psychotic in their rage against this WH and this country.

Colbert went on and on and on and on and then he showed a stupid 10 minute movie with Helen Thomas that went on and on and on .....BORING. DUMB. Not funny. Only an idiot would get his news from the Comedy Channel. John Stewart ain't funny either.

So who picks the entertainment at one of these things? I thought it was supposed to be sort of a "roast" and that is why the President always appears and makes jokes about themselves. Who puts this dinner on?

The White House Correspondent's Association as far as I know.

You raise a very important point, and I think that's why people weren't responding, though I imagine a lot wanted to. He broke with tradition and was vile. But, it paid off for him, he's a hero among the left. His miscalculation is that they matter.

I can stomach Stewart sometimes, when he's not blatantly biased, but every time I try to watch Colboring, I turn it off w/in minutes. He's just not funny.

Another point: when they showed the clips of past presidents, Clinton was shown roasting everyone but himself. Very typical.

That sums things up beautifully! I changed the channel a couple of minutes into Colbert's routine, it was so bad.

Was that the event where Barbara Bush was telling W what to do and he finally said, Mom, do you mind? I'm the President of the United States!

For some reason, I thought this was put on by the White House Staff to "thank" the WH Correspondents. What they would have to be thankful for, I have no idea. But that is what I thought.
