It's Time to Infringe on the Second Amendment
Seattle Post-Intelligencer ^ | 29 April 2006 | Cathy Sorbo

What would happen if all personal firearms were banned? It'll never happen, but I enjoy mulling it over almost as much as I like to think about a night without car alarms, or becoming the nanny to Jude Law's children.

Last weekend there was some deadly gun action in the neighborhood of Pioneer Square. It was difficult for me to comprehend such violence, especially now with all those crime-promoting London Plane trees gone from Occidental Park. The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department had better hurry up with that proposed coffee stand and the bocce ball courts before something else goes down.

Oh, and then there was the armed man, shot and killed by Seattle police when he allegedly took aim at them after being confronted. And the cab driver in Tacoma, shot by a passenger.

Gun violence and gun control issues can quickly divide communities. Gun advocates everywhere will tout their right to bear arms while others would prefer the right to live in a society without people packing weapons down the backs of their pants.

Gun advocates have the National Rifle Association behind them. The NRA holds firmly to the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, which states, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

Sorry, but it's been 215 years and it's time to infringe.

The recent spate of foiled schoolyard massacres is more than alarming: North Pole, Alaska, on April 22; Riverton, Kansas, on April 20; Platte City, Missouri, on April 17; Pierce County on April 7; Atco, New Jersey, on April 5; Foley, Alabama, on March 24; Rochester Hills, Michigan, on March 20; Greenwood, Indiana, on March 2; Muscatine, Iowa, on March 1; and, most recently, Puyallup on April 24, when a 16-year old boy's massacre plan was disrupted.

From his home police seized two rifles, two handguns, ammunition, a homemade pipe bomb, Xbox and Clearasil.

This paints a picture of a troubled boy who luckily cried out for help via instant messages and blurbs on his MySpace page.

It's quite clear that kids are becoming increasingly more fragile over time.

They must be heavily conflicted and frightened by the never-ending wars, bombs, famine, deceit and mistrust in world leaders, expanding poverty and the WASL test.

Mustn't forget to mention deadly influenzas, AIDS, cancers galore and flesh-eating disease: Stub a toe, lose a leg and then die anyway. Who wants to continue in that world?

"Is bird flu in your backyard? Find out at 11."

Throw a dysfunctional home life and a couple of firearms into the mix and you have a kid on the edge.

Some high schools now come equipped with metal detectors.

When I was in high school, I never had to pass through metal detectors on my way to class, which is a good thing because I had braces and headgear. The only thing I feared, besides fifth period algebra class, was joining the Alcyonians girl club. They would haze the newbies by making them wear a tail and a dog collar all day long.

Sometimes one would even end up in a trash bin located most humiliatingly where all the senior boys would hang out.

But I'd go to math class any day over being randomly shot as part of a premeditated execution plan involving bombs and firearms.

When I lived in the University District circa 1998-99, there was quite the upsurge of drug dealing. The escalation of such activity was a deciding factor in our move out of the neighborhood. On the very day we moved out there was a dealer sitting on a retaining wall while customers actually lined up while waiting to purchase their tiny plastic baggy of goods. I wouldn't be surprised if those bold and enterprising drug dealers later ended up with their own table at the farmers market.

There were never any incidents with gunfire, but it seemed imminent, just a matter of time. We got the heck out of there.

Public school students do not have that option. Instead they have school dress and behavior codes prohibiting open-toed shoes as well as assault rifles.

I hope these kids can enjoy a relatively violence-free end to their school year, and hope they can find Kevlar prom wear.

Judging by Cathy, it might be time to infringe on the 19th Amendment, too.

Gee, I wonder how many of these gun crimes are being committed by CRIMINALS who illegally got their guns? But God forbid we actually PUNISH criminals, no pass some more useless laws on LAW ABIDING citizens! Is there ANYTHING the modern Political Left is NOT completely clueless about?

Oh, yes, let's make guns illegal. Because we all know that criminals would be the very first ones to turn theirs in, right?

This genius can live with all the law abiding criminals.

Me? No thanks. I prefer to be able to protect myself and my family from the non-law abiding criminals, thank you very much.

Little commies like Cathy don't have enough backbone to do anything but whine. Lets see, do I trust Thomsas Jefferson's instincts, or some loser whiny ass liberal in Seattle? Tough choice eh?

I wonder if Cathy has a sign on her lawn proclaiming her property a firearms free zone?

You forget to mention all the times personal firearms saved the life of persons getting attacked! You also forgot that if you take away firearms from the people, you can't defend yourself from the low life who doesn't care about the law!
You forget that the police arrive after you have been attacked , raped, robbed, or murdered to try and figure who did it to you!

OK you just forgot!

Um, Cathy? I can manufacture a gun in about ten minutes.

How, exactly, are you going to put that genie back in the bottle?

She wants to start with the second??
Lets get rid of the first, tell her to shut up, and see how she likes it.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Sorry, but it's been 215 years and it's time to infringe."

No it's NOT time to infringe on the 2nd Amendment which IS LEGAL.
It's time to catch gang bangers and other assorted criminals who are
possessing/using guns ILLEGALLY.

What would happen? Only the members of a CORRUPT GOVERNMENT and common criminals would have firearms then. It says it all about the Second Amendment.

Gun advocates have the National Rifle Association behind them.

Talk about TOTALLY NOT understanding how the NRA and our political system works. The NRA represents me. It doesn't back me at all. Cathy would just $h!t if she read my tagline.

YOu mean 16th century technology isn't a government secret?

At least shes being honest that there is a right to bear arms. In high school I had history teachers who claimed the 2nd amendment allowed the states to have the national guard.
