Desperate NC State Trying to Lure Coach by Offering Duke, UNC Tickets
SportsPickle.com ^ | April 19, 2006

Posted on 04/25/2006 7:15:45 PM PDT by southernnorthcarolina

Having seen Texas’ Rick Barnes and Memphis’ John Calipari spurn their offers in recent weeks to take over NC State’s basketball team, the school has turned to an unorthodox – but no doubt brilliant – tactic to lure the new face of the program.

“We’re willing to pay top dollar for a new coach to replace Herb Sendek,” said NC State athletics director Lee Fowler, “but so far that hasn’t been enough. So now we’re offering season tickets for both Duke and North Carolina basketball. We’re pretty sure that will do the trick.”

College basketball analysts say NC State’s decision is a major step forward for the program.

“The thing with NC State always has been that they’re alumni, boosters and fans are under the insane delusion that the Wolfpack program is on the same level with Duke and North Carolina,” said Jay Bilas of ESPN. “Of course, any intelligent person knows that idea is lightyears from the truth. But at least this shows they’re starting to come to grips with their reality. It’s basically saying: ‘Come to NC State. Not only will you be close to great programs like Duke and UNC, but you’ll also get to go to their games free of charge.’”

Fowler says NC State’s proximity to Durham and Chapel Hill makes the Wolfpack job very attractive.

“I think a young, up-and-coming coach will be a great fit for us,” said Fowler. “Not only will he be able to put an ACC team on his resume, but by being so close to top-notch schools like Carolina and Duke, he’ll be able to watch them closely and absorb how they do things so he can become a better coach and maybe even win a national championship one day after he leaves NC State.”

And while coaching the Wolfpack will be the job’s top priority, NC State claims it will be open to their new coach’s outside interests.

“Some nights we have games at the same time Duke and Carolina are playing,” said Fowler. “So it’s going to suck for our new coach to have to miss some of their games. But we’re more than willing to be flexible with this. If there’s a really big game he wants to see – like Duke-Maryland or UNC-Wake Forest or something like that – we’ll let him take the night off to see it and have an assistant coach in his place. And honestly, whatever it is that prospective coaches want, we’re willing to do it. Please make sure that goes in the article because we really, really need a coach. It’s getting pretty desperate around here.”

Bilas thinks that with all of NC State’s new selling points, it won’t be long before their new coach is announced.

“NC State is a great job,” said Bilas, “because good schools like Duke and North Carolina are only a short drive away.”

So sorry!
Neglected to ping you to #20, where "sarasmom responds to Howlin".

Missed meeting you at various and sundry FReepworthy "occasions" also.

But have a nice day!

North Carolina is just an all around bad place to live.

As a native who can trace his ancestors back over 270 years in this state (the European side, the Cherokee side has been here much longer), please let me know what I can personally do to help you in your move to whatever state you came from if you hate it so much

The natives are nice, but are few and far between.

No there are plenty of native citizens. We just don't like people coming down here telling us what's wrong with our state and trying to change it to, and I quote every damn yankee I've ever met, 'how we did it back home'.

Take offense, don't take offense. I don't care. I'm sick and tired of non-natives (especially those coming from northern climates) telling me how bad my home state is. I-95 runs north and South. However if you head South, don't stop until you reach Florida. There's a big clump of yankees down that way I hear.

Never encountered you here either.

I promise never to stay a single day in North Carolina again, once I leave this place.

That you just proved my point is unneeded verification of my opinion, but I appreciate your correcting me on the misconception that I harbored about it being the transplants that made this state "not a nice place to live".

Thank you.

sarasmom, apparently you've had an unpleasant experience in your brief stay in North Carolina; if so, as a several-generation native, I truly regret that. But I must say I am perplexed by your attack.

Let's review. I posted what was clearly (or so I thought) a piece of satire concerning the difficulties being experienced by North Carolina State University in hiring a new basketball coach. I thought it was a fairly clever piece; I expected that I would get a rise out of State fans, and in this I was not disappointed. All in good fun.

You, however, chose to use the article as an excuse to launch a blanket attack on the entire state. While of course I disagree with your opinion of North Carolina as "just an all around bad place to live," I am more perplexed as to why you picked this particular spot to open fire. What under God's yellow sun does your response at post 3 have to do with the thread's subject?

It bothers me when you don't say where YOU are from.

I'll warn the people in Florida.

Fowler: Lavin, Beilien dropped due to Al-Qaeda links

Citing recently released CIA photographs he found on the internet, Lee Fowler has dropped both Steve Lavin and John Beilien from consideration for the eternal vacancy.

"Mr. Murphy don't want no turrist, so them boys is off th' list", said Fowler.

Search committee chief advisor Milburn Drysdale was unavailable for comment.

Were you so interested in learning about NC that you might have ASKED to be on the NC Ping List? I don't see your name on the ping list.

Have a gas in Florida.

Why don't they offer Tom Burleson the job. He apparently has nothing else to do.
